Wanted: Good Samaritans With A Shovel

Sunday, December 2, 2012 @ 4:44 AM

Prince George residents have had a relatively easy go, snow-wise, so far this fall

Prince George, BC –  The Prince George Council of Seniors is looking for a number of kind-hearted, and strong-backed, individuals to step up to the shovel this winter…

The Council is looking for volunteers to shovel walkways, front steps, and, possibly, short driveways for elderly residents in our city over the coming months.

Council of Seniors Manager, Lola-Dawn Fennell, says, "Snow can be a real serious issue for seniors in the North, or to anyone with health or mobility issues.  What happens if you have an appointment at the dialysis unit and you can’t get out of your driveway?  What happens if you’re dependent on Meals-on-Wheels for your hot meal of the day and the volunteer can’t get up your front steps?"

Fennell says first and foremost, the Council is encouraging those who’d like to offer up their muscle-power for shovelling to look around their own neighbourhoods.  "If you see an elderly person or others that need a hand, be a good neighbour and help them out."

She says, if that’s not the case, and you’d still like to help out, you can call the Council office at 250-564-5888 and they will work to match you with someone needing assistance in the same general area.

"The hope is, that once that initial match is made, volunteers will continue to take care of the senior’s front steps, or walkway for the rest of the winter months."

There you go kids! There’s an opportunity for you to show your neighbours that all young people aren’t selfish and useless. I know we did this as kids quite a lot, helping seniors with wood cutting as well.
Shucks, my Dad shovelled snow until he was ninety!

I remember as kid in cubs we used to help people with snow removal. here is a thought maybe we could use the people that are resting up in the “Hilton on the hill” to do these chores. be a big change for them to give something back to the community that they have taken so much from. instead of chain gangs there could be firewood and snow removal gangs.
just a sunday mornin thought
have a great day

Get a bus and pick out all the able bodied young men in the welfare line, then deliver them somewhere to take a shot at something constructive and healthy. It might be something nice to add to their resume. You know, the one they are typing up on their iphone while standing in line for their free money!

awesome idea. Would get involved if living in PG. Anyone know of a simiilar program in Smithers?

DPJ, why do you need a program? Just do it.

Problem today is some of the ones that shovel your driveway can case the joint.

High school students looking for volunteer work credit? Seems like a good fit to me. They have the least amount of responsibilities in daily life, have age on their side and some have a car to drive to a home to shovel.

very few high school kids shovel the driveway — where do think you are — in the 1950’s? Most of them won’t even mow the lawn. Ask any parent and they will be embarrased because their kids don’t help around the homestead in this new millenium.

Any parents who are ’embarrassed’ because their teenage kids aren’t helping around the house are doing a pretty lousy job themselves.

“Problem today is some of the ones that shovel your driveway can case the joint.”

Those ones don’t need a shovel to case the joint. They can see more walking up the driveway without bending over to push snow.
I agree with BUT . Get out there and Just do it.

you nailed it “checkitout”…right on…I agree fully with you
