Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George outdoor ice oval is open for another winter season.
In fact today marks the opening of the 14th season for the oval, located behind CN Centre. The occasion was marked by a number of short speeches and ribbon-cutting in the minus 11 temperatures before skaters took to the oval for a day of free
skating.
The President of the Outdoor Ice Oval Society, Kathy Lewis, welcomed those who turned out and thanked the numerous volunteers who have given their time since November 22nd to get the oval into the spectacular shape it is in. Andy Beesley, Manager of CN Centre and Recreation Facilities, spoke of the City’s pride in being able to contribute to such a fine facility which serves the people of Prince George. Stu Ballantyne, CEO of the 2015 Canada Winter Games,(pictured to right) says the countdown to hosting the country continues, adding he looks forward to the role civic facilities such as the ice oval will play in putting on a great winter games that the city will be proud of.
And acting Mayor Albert Koehler welcomed those on hand, urged people to take advantage of the oval and, with Lewis, cut the ribbon across the sheet of ice officially opening the oval for the winter.
On hand for the opening was the person who was instrumental in starting an outdoor ice oval in Prince George, Dick Vonuegen.
Now again Saturday’s skating was free but there is normally a nominal charge of $2 per person or $5 for a family, cheap entertainment and exercise any way you look at it.

Awesome- thanks to the volunteers who made it happen! Gonna try it out this afternoon.
Thank you so much to Kathy Lewis and Dick Vonuegen (and others) to getting this venue up and running. Love it so much. It’s a great place to take the kids after school for a quick skate and a wonderful way to fit in some cardio for me.
