Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings are doing a good job of turning around what had been a dismal home stand.

After dropping the first four games of the seven straight contests on Coliseum ice, the Spruce Kings have chalked up a pair of victories this weekend with a chance to make it a clean sweep Sunday afternoon.  Coming off a 3-1 victory over Cowichan Valley Friday night the home club outscored Mainland Division rival the Coquitlam Express 6-4 Saturday to move three points ahead of the Express in the standings.

The first period featured a goalfest with each club hitting the back of the net three times. The Spruce Kings opened the scoring at 5:39 as Mark Begert tallied on the power play. The Express got that one back at 8:09. Tyson Witala made it 2-1 Kings when he scored a shorthanded goal at 9:34. Coquitlam tied it on the power play at 9:50. Chad Staley got his first of two on the night at 12:27 but the visitors squared it at 3 at 17:07 and that’s the way the period ended.

Shayne Morrissey scored twice for the Spruce Kings, both goals coming in the second period in which the Express were outshot 18-10. It was 5-3 Kings after two.  Staley scored his second goal of the night at 5:24 of the third to give the Spruce Kings a 6-3 lead. But Coquitlam made things a little closer at 11:45 with the Kings scrambling around and a little disorganized.  But that was it, 6-4 the final score.  Prince George outshot Coquitlam 42-36, with Kirk Thompson picking up his second win in two nights. Mitch Eden added a couple of assists for the winners.

The clubs go at it again Sunday afternoon at 3 at the Coliseum.

The Spruce Kings now have 34 points, just two behind the second-place Surrey Eagles who fell 2-1 to Victoria. Penticton beat Langley 5-1.
