Steel Workers Call On Province For Support In Coal Worker Conflict

Friday, December 14, 2012 @ 9:43 AM
Burnaby- The Steelworkers are calling on Premier Clark to stand up for BC workers and abandon governments plans to use temporary foreign workers at the HD Mine near Chetwynd.
The Steelworkers say many question have been raised about the plans of the Murray River Coal Mine.
The steelworkers accuse the government of using foreign workers over Canadians.
Steve Hunt, USW Director for Western Canada ,says we need to find out more about the appalling safety record of the Chinese Coal industry, the companies use of Mandarin as a job qualification, recruiting fees, and the length of time the workers will be employed.
Hunt says the matter is subject to a Federal court case and is also being investigated by the Federal Human Resources Ministry.

There’s a lot of hearsay and rumours about the foreign workers that are coming to Canada. I would like to base my opinion on facts. 1. Is this coal company really having trouble finding enough experienced Canadian coal miners that will work in Tumbler Ridge? 2. I want to know if they are really being paid much less than Canadian Coal Miners? 3. I want to know if they really had to pay illegal fees to come to Canada to work?
If any one of these questions is true, then Canadians have every right to be angry and this anger will not be racially motivated such as HD Mines seems to be saying !

Call Pat Bell for the answer.. isn’t he the one that stated “it is OK.. a temporary fix ..but he forgot it was for 14 years!”
All Canadian workers who have applied for a job in the mine should scream to Human Rights ” racial discrimination”.

Yes the Feds and the Province have some answering to do here, did they not do any home work on this? or was it the plan all along?

This is a symptom of a broken country. Our politicians have abandoned a citizen centric free enterprise economy for a monopoly capitalist centric old boys club.

We need to take power out of the hands of the bureaucracy and individual politicians and flatten out our democratic decision making process to broaden the base and include all the stakeholders in Canada, and not just the ones with money to buy subsidized profits at the expense of Canada, Canadian standards, and Canadians first.

Any new chinese working at Wendy’s?

BC jobs plan my foot, 15 mllion in BS ads not much more, bring it on increase our welfare rlls screw our unemployed..crap

The Unions and the Canadian Miners need to take this to Ottawa, this is a violation of our charter rights at the highest level. The charter says there’s two official languages in Canada, English and French. So that being said this is a violation of the Canadian people’s rights under our own charter.

If we don’t have enough workers, bring in immigrants by all means. Legitimate immigrants that live, work, and support the Canadian economy. And none of this BS about being able to pay foreigners 15% less than Canadian standard wages. WTF is that all about?
