Cougars Blank Giants 6-0

Saturday, December 15, 2012 @ 10:16 PM

The return of Colin Jacobs and Chase Witala couldn’t have come at a bigger time for the Prince George Cougars. Chase Witala scored once and added three assists, while Jacobs earned a goal and two helpers. Brett Zarowny turned aside all 23 shots he faced and the Prince George Cougars skated to a 6-0 victory against the Vancouver Giants at home on Saturday night.

The Cougars led 1-0 just 14 seconds into the game. Cain Franson tried to pass the puck up ice for the Giants, but his pass deflected off of Colin Jacobs’ skate and in past goaltender Liam Liston. For Jacobs it was his team leading 11th goal of the season.

Over the next few minutes, the Vancouver Giants put some great attempts on goal, but Brett Zarowny was alert, and made some difficult saves in the early going.

Prince George extended their lead to 2-0 when Chase Witala sent a pass from behind the Giants goal right into the slot, where Alex Forsberg received the puck and snuck one past Liam Liston for his eighth of the season.

Just over three minutes later, the Cougars made it 3-0 when Zach Pochiro skated in on a two-on-one with Chase Witala. Witala fed Pochiro on the right wing, and Pochiro put the puck under the bar and in for his fourth of the season.

Chase Witala would wrap up the first period with a one-timed goal on a late Cougars power play to make it 4-0 after one period. For Witala, it was a three point period.

The Cougars got into some penalty trouble in the second period, but the penalty killers stood their ground. Brett Zarowny was equally sharp in the second period, making some key saves, and got help from his goal post during one of the Giants power plays.

Late in the second, the Cougars made it 5-0 when Daulton Siwak took a Chase Witala pass, and beat Liam Liston up high for his eighth of the season.

Siwak would then add another in the third period to round out the scoring for the Cougars on Saturday.

Brett Zarowny turned aside all 23 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season, and the Cougars won the special teams war killing off all six Giants power play chances, including two five-on-three attempts.

With a win, the Cougars record now sits at 11-18-1-3 and they have now regained their eight point lead on the Vancouver Giants, while inching to within two points of eighth place in the WHL’s Western Conference standings.

The Cougars and Giants will go back at it on Sunday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m. It’s the Cougars annual Teddy Bear and Toque Toss game.
