It started shortly after 9:00 when RCMP received a report a Chevrolet Venture minivan had been stolen from the 2700 block of South Ospika Boulevard. Officers attended the area and began making patrols.
At 9:28 am, police received a report of an attempted robbery of a student near John McInnis Centre, on Westwood Drive, that allegedly occurred at approximately 9:00 am. A male student was approached by a man demanding his sunglasses and lighter. The man fit the description of the suspect that stole the minivan a few minutes later.
At 9:38 am, police received a second report of an attempted robbery in the same area. This time an adult male on Athlone Avenue was approached by a similarly described suspect. The suspect demanded the keys to his vehicle and told the victim that he had a gun, although no gun was seen. The victim did not comply and the suspect fled. Police continued to search for the suspect and the stolen minivan in the Peden Hill area.
At 10:17 am, a report of a collision in a driveway on Lansdowne Road, off Ferry Avenue, was received by police. The vehicle was confirmed to have been the stolen minivan. Police officers including the Police Dog Service, attended the area. The minivan was located unoccupied at the bottom of Lansdowne Road. Officers, with the assistance of a Police Service Dog, tracked the suspect up the hill and through the Prince George Cemetery. As the track was continuing, an observant member of the public called police and advised that a man had recently crossed Highway 16 and was heading down Range Road. The witness provided a description that matched that of the suspect.
After a brief foot chase, several officers were able to surround the suspect near the corner of Range Road and Westwood Drive. At approximately 10:30 am, a suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
A 19 year old man who recently moved to Prince George from Fort St. John, is being held in custody until his court appearance which is set for tomorrow.
