Poll Says Paid Parking Will Hurt Downtown

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 @ 3:53 AM
Prince George, B.C.- As the City of Prince George prepares to go to tender to seek bids on new technology that will bring pay parking back to the downtown of the City, you say it will hurt the downtown.

Our  non scientific opinion poll asked if you thought returning pay parking to the downtown would hurt downtown Prince George.

There were 4276 responses, of which;
4005 said yes, it would hurt the downtown,  while 271 said no it would not.

The City expects it will cost at least $1.1 million for  new equipment to be placed throughout the downtown. It plans on borrowing that money from its own reserves

Kinda a no brainer IMO. Most of the folks I know don’t really like to go down there now. Make it more costly to head down there and they’ll avoid the place like the plague in the future.

Its not about the paid parking at all… its about the fines for not paying for the paid parking. Like printing money.

so if i need to go down town 2 or 3 times a day i have to fork out 4 or 6 dollars?
i don’t think i’ll be going down there very much.

Let’s see … free parking at Pine Centre …. paid parking downtown …. free parking at Spruceland ….. paid parking downtown …… free parking at Parkwood …… paid parking downtown ….. free parking at Westgate …. paid parking downtown ….. free parking at CH Shopping Centre ….. paid parking downtown …….

gee …. where oh where will I go shopping????

The number of small cities getting rid of paid parking downtown is increasing by the day. But hey, this is PG ….. logic is hard to come by here these days ……

Oh … I forgot to mention one needs stores to go shopping ……

I know … instituting paid parking will cause an unprecedented influx of new retail …….

;-)

Paid parking. Just one more thing to add to the list of city council screw up. the election can not come soon enough. Soon we will see city hall rage just like we see road rage.

I think the hidden agenda is to put businesses out of business in the downtown area so the city can buy even more land downtown. Of course Commonwealth will buy it first, then flip to the city for a profit, a la PG hotel.

It seems to me a no brainer, If you want to stamp out retail downtown, put in paid parking.

How could anything make downtown worse?

If it wasnt for Northern Hardware I would never go downtown paid parking or not. I dont do my Xmas shopping in pawn shops.

What happens to a street smart person in British Columbia when he/she becomes mayor? Well—- are you talking Prince George or any other town in BC. We will say Prince George for instance. Well from what I can see the Mayor becomes a self proclaimed Monarch/Dictator. Oh now I see why the population of your town remains stagnent and the residents are just going through the motions— oh well I’ll have to look at Quesnel for a place to live. Thanx.

Paid parking will hurt the downtown employees.

With the stink I smelled coming into town this morning it is no wonder no one wants to start a business or live down there. Until that disgusting odor is removed for good you can expect pg to always be a stagnant backwater.

I think some of the No it would not responses were “ironic” as paid parking or no the responders do not frequent downtown.

Paid parking will hurt the downtown employees.

If they bring back pay parking the downtown won`t need many employees. Will they?

“If they bring back pay parking the downtown won`t need many employees. Will they?”

Not really. Most of those employees are office and government workers. There’s not much retail left down there.

Sad. Ah well, what is there in the downtown core, that you can’t find at Pine Centre or CH? Some panhandling losers (not counting city council) a foul smell, and a couple of cheesy little shops that sell the same stuff that’s available everywhere.
I’m off to Pine Centre and some free parking.

Won’t be getting any money outa me. I will never ever pay them one cent. Hope they spend a couple extra million to make the meters damage proof. Just walk past one with a nice heavy block of fire wood under the coat and accidently bang into the thing. Just smash them up so they are always fixing them. Or try a few drops a crazy glue in the slot. Or just some bubble gum. Hope every one vandalizes these machines. Until next election when we can get rid of these morons running this town. Eugene hopefully will be back. And hopefully some new people will step up and offer to replace these ones we now have to stomach there daily.

Soon the HST will be extinguished. Along ith EVERY LIE-beral campbell lackey hanging on there now gouging us with this illegal tax grab. May can’t come soon enough. Bye Bye snooki.

Down town is a dump. If it wasn’t for the odd visit to the Keg, I would never go down there. Every city in Canada wrestles with what to do with their downtown. PG is no different. I just get tired of being accosted and bothered by hobo panhandlers that want money. It will never clean up enough to get me comfortable with walking around down there.

Way to go Mattyc, first your proud of yourself for doing all your shopping in foreign provinces and countries and now you advocate for vandalism of the infrastructure! It may be unwanted infrastructure, but destroying them and the costs incurred costing taxpayers even more is just plain ignorant.

So the city wants to spend over a million in getting a fancy new system up and running, but exactly how long will it take to make that money back?

I remember hearing $80,000 in revenue yearly was what they “projected” to be losing when they removed it. That’s a long time just to break even on this stupid new system.

The Cities with Pay Parking also have a Good Public Transport System, like Subways, Street Cars, Buses, you can’t say Prince George has good System. You just about forced to take a Car to get around on Time.

“I know … instituting paid parking will cause an unprecedented influx of new retail …….”

Exactly Gus, all the parking revenue can be used to buy up more of the downtown and handed over to developers for a steal. Then the developers can sell it back to the city for a profit. Then the taxpayers can give the new business’s that move in down there massive tax breaks.

Vote me for Mayor!

Paid parking may or may not bring in new retail, but at the very least, people will be able to finally find a parking spot.

I love the downtown and shop there first and I have never had any problems with the so called panhandlers. All I met are friendly people that greet me with a smile and a “good day” and I return the the smile and good day. I have only been asked for money a few times and when I politely tell them I have no change it is accepted politely. Remember treat every one as you want to be treated.

The only time I have had a pan handler that scared me was at Spruceland.
