The Media Must Not Prevent A Fair Trial

Mr Justice Glen Parrett made a point in Supreme Court Wednesday that he will ensure that the media does not, in any way, affect the trial of Cody Legebokoff.
Mr Justice Parrett last week took a number of the media to task for incorrect reporting and false statements that could run the risk of derailing a fair trial for the accused , take away the opportunity for the families involved to attend the court proceedings , and make it more difficult to find an impartial jury.
By placing a publication ban on the pre-trial proceedings, this case will not be tried in the media before a jury is selected and the case is heard in court.
The media has a duty to report on events. It also has a duty to report on facts correctly. Many of us failed to perform last week. In at least three cases last week the media failed to provide accurate information and that is a disservice to the accused, the families of the victims and to the court system.
By placing the ban on publication Mr Justice Parrett has served notice to the media, the families, and the jury, which by the way could include you, that a fair trial is paramount.
