Prince George- Highway 16 west is closed at Peden Hill as police await the arrival of sanding trucks to spread sand on the roadway after four trucks jack- knifed while trying to come down the highway.
Police are asking the driving public to stay clear of the area untill road conditions improve.
Police say they hope to have the highway reopened as soon as conditions allow.

dont spread sand on the hills before there is trouble or anything!
How about telling the Big Rigs to stay of the Road until safe to drive again! YRB told me once they pay for the Sand by the Pound!
Putting sand down then having it get covered with several inches if fresh snow renders it useless. The snow gets compact and slippery while the sand sits underneath it doing nothing.
Hmmm … I have been away for a while… but unless my memory is gone completely… the photo on the left looks WEST going up the hill… and the one on the right looks EAST going down the hill…
But … WTH… maybe the City changed the road in the last revision to the OCP…

Ohhhhh… wait…. my bad !!!!

trucks stuck on Peden hill in the snow… in other news the sun rose this morning and there is unrest in the middle east. *eye roll*
I wonder how many of those “professional” drivers in the semi-trucks made use of our expensive “chain-up” areas before traveling Peden hill????? Anyone who did not should be ticketed by CVSE for unsafe driving as a jack-knifed truck is a hazard to all others on the road; not exactly in control of the rig now are they…..
just rereading – did he jackknife it coming DOWN?
…just saying… Unless you have driven trucks and know that conditions change very quickly, even between two trucks going up a hill, even within a minute or two, when its snowing fast like this, your comment is just more huff and puff from an armchair critic.
Hazards are also created by cars that spin out in front of trucks or cut them off.
By the way, even if YRB had four trucks going up and down the hill continuously when it snows like this, sometimes it isn’t enough.
In fact, at that point the view is actually almost north and south.
We all know Peden Hill is a substandard section of the Highway and we all know that it is not as important as the Sea to Sky.
Maybe if we were to put some Winter Games events in CH, we could get the Winter Games committee to view our venue and suggest that we have to make sure that the section gets improved since they would not like to see a bus carrying Games athletes get creamed by a jackknifing truck.
That should free up $50million in provincial and federal funds.

Gee …. don’t tell that to highways crews who sand outside the city limits …. They do all the time what it is you are saying you should not do
You know, they have readerboards on the southern highways telling about conditions on the highways ahead. For those people who do not know this part of the highway, or do not know it very well, it might be a good ide to put some sort of a flashing warning up for days like today …. I mean, they wanr that there is a traffic light ahead and that based on the distance to travel to it, expect it to be red if the light is flashing …. so prepare to stop.
No trucks should ever have to chain up on Peden hill. A complete lack of proper ploughing and sanding is the reason these trucks are having trouble. What century will YRB get their butts booted from this contract. Same thing every year!
Sure allot of experts on here today, I tend think that not one of you have ever been behind the wheel of a truck.
1st, there should be PROPER chain up area’s at the bottom and TOP of this hill. The ones added a year or two ago are a joke, not much more than one truck can fit in them and when the plows go by they will them up with snow so truck cant get in them.
2nd, there should be mandatory chain lights at the bottom and top of the hill. When these lights are flashing you MUST chain up.
3rd, yes, sand down, even when covered in snow soon after is a help, any trucker worth a pinch of salt know you try to find the “dirty snow” when going up or down a hill. Dirty snow has quite good traction.
4th, the problems today go all the way back to the heavy snow fall last week, the highways were not properly maintained then and there is still a slippery compact on the hills which makes them rougher and much harder to find traction on.
5th, civilian vehicles must learn how to operate around trucks, so many times you see them traveling to close, get in front and slow down or tailgate.
Many drivers dont want to chain up near Peden Hill because there are afraid they are going to get run over by the 4 wheel traffic buzzing by.
One last point, who in their right mind thought a set of lights at the bottom of that hill was a good idea? Just like Vanderhoof, some real short sightedness went into that one.
The trucks who have the most problems on Peden Hill are empty chip truck and empty lumber trains. They have no weight for traction on their drive tires and still have to drag another 20 wheels through the built up snow, its a recipe for disaster.
YES YES YES… Have Winter Games in CH.. Hell… everything else is up there…hehehe
“Sure allot of experts on here today, I tend think that not one of you have ever been behind the wheel of a truck.”
You better tend to think again.
“civilian vehicles”? Are the trucks not “civilian” too? Just a tad pretentious from that old truck driver I think.
Tailgating a truck doesn’t bother the truck. Whats it going to do but run into the rear end.
“The trucks who have the most problems on Peden Hill are empty chip truck and empty lumber trains. They have no weight for traction on their drive tires and still have to drag another 20 wheels through the built up snow, its a recipe for disaster.”
Did chips for a number of years and never spun out or had to chain up on that hill. It’s all in your right foot.
Part of the reason truck drivers don’t chain when they should is laziness. aka the ‘The conditions are bad, but I think I can make it’ mentality.
If the road is maintained no one should ever have to chain up for Peden Hill.
A little bit of sand on the hill before the snow storm works wonders. Those trucks are heavy and they cut right through the snow to the grit underneath if its there.
Problem is the hill was a glaze of ice last night before the snow came and YRB was not out west at all so the hill didn’t get sanded before the snow came.
Its purely a lack of maintenance.
Jack-knifing when applying the brakes is most likely to happen when coming down the hill. And spinning out going up the hill.
Happens every year. This is nothing new for this part of the country and this section of highway.
My solution is to provide better service on this part of the highway by YRB. Continual grading and Salt. It’s only -7.
A very confusing story but if you look at the drive BC photo on the left above or better yet the Dive BC website and click on “replay the day” you will see that traffic has been stopped in the westbound uphill direction of travel.
Trucks very obviously spun out going uphill due to poor ploughing and sanding.
But,
virtually all trucks are commercial vehicles, most 4 wheelers are personal, or civilian vehicles.
To the guy who thinks that commercial vehicles arnt bothered by tailgaters doesnt have a clue about driving. Just a simple example, you have one idiot on your arse, your going up a slippery hill, you know you have to grab a gear but the idiot behind you has no clue that a sudden change in speed happens.
The fact that you dont think the guy driving the truck cares shows that you have a poor attitude towards professional drivers.
If you want every truck to chain up for peden hill in that one little chain up area you would have a line of trucks backed up to superstore in about ten minutes. If you have never had to pull an empty b train up that hill you really have no clue what you’re talking about
Albus: “2nd, there should be mandatory chain lights at the bottom and top of the hill. When these lights are flashing you MUST chain up. “
Best suggestion in this thread.
JohnnyBelt, suggestion 1 has to come into place before suggestion 2 can be considered.
We have a real problem around here with Ministry of Highways staff making decisions without having a clue what they are doing. 2 great examples, the chainup pull out at the bottom of Peden Hill, and the brake check at the top of Mud River. 2 good ideas with terrible implementation.
Vir, I happen to be a driver and tailgaters don’t bother me. Why would they. Them running into me is akin to a mosquito bite on a mooses a$$!
If the dough heads are too stupid to realise they are putting themselves in danger, too bad for them. I’m not about to change what I’m doing because of the dopes.
This is why nothing gets done, everyone trys to out think it——PLOW and SAND then repet as necesary. Quaranteed this will solve the problem. Just can’t believe someone at YRB hasn’t stood up at a crew meeting and said “Ha Boss, have you evey thought of plowing and sanding during a snow storm” DUH.
