Anybody else notice that a lot of the Christmas shoppers this year seemed to be way more unfriendly and less prepared for Christmas this year compared to previous years?
I noticed quite a few people with short tempers and less friendly demeanours as well. I was done all my Xmas shopping by the last week of November and everything was wrapped by middle of December and when people asked me the usual question “Done all your shopping yet?” And when I said yes I was often verbally abused and generally most were women who did the verbal tirades. All because I was done and prepared for Xmas early.
I definitely felt way less of the Xmas spirit this year from many people.
I have really noticed some serious issues with our snow removal this year.
1. The drivers of snow plows on the road do not follow any road regulations. Two times my wife has been run right off the road by a plow coming straight at her. The City of PG or YRB claim plows have right away. I’m sorry but they are not emergency vehicles. I wonder what our costs are each year from accidents with plows in Prince George are each year. That would make a great story 250 news. Oh yes the freedom of information act.
2. The more “upper class areas” in Prince George get way more snow removal than lets say” other areas of town”. Two and three times more. We have waited 10 days and 8 days after a large snowfall for snow removal. It was after a phone call that they finally came. I guess the HART isnt as important, and yes theres’ a bus route that goes right down our road. What happened to bus routes and major routes first?
I wonder here Burns Lake is getting their gas from? At 108.9 p/l I think we should have some of that here in Prince George.
To bad the World Juniors are in Russia with the time delay, looks like the Canadian team is doing well. I know you can PVR the game but open up any media online and the score is the first thing posted.. kind of takes away the enjoyment of wstching the taped game. Not into watching games at 1 am live as that work thing gets in the way.
Go Canada Go
Happy New Year everyone.
Happy NewYear all even to the ones complaining so early in the morning
Wow, xmas shoppers short tempered, snow not cleaned quick enough, world juniors on to early, gas cheaper in Burns Lake!
Merry Xmas and a happy New Year to all!!!!!
I was trying to find something to bitch about, I guess I found it :-)
It sure would be nice if the Sports Announcers (local to TSN) would get the wording right.
eg. they say “he shoots the puck at the goal” or ” the ball goes over the goal”
This is Wrong.
Proper wording is “he shoots the puck at the net” or “the ball goes over the net”
When the puck or ball goes into the net then it is a GOAL,a Score-if you will.
Say net when you mean net.
Say goal when the puck/ball crosses the goal line into the net.
lou,
I cant help myself, you cant find anything better to whine about? You must lead a very happy life. Join the rest of us, complain about the important things in life. Surely somebody cut you off and you can post their plate or maybe the garbage man forgot to pick up your container?
If you can’t bother to write CHRIST infront of MAS than don’t write the word at all.
The word is “CHRISTMAS”
“X” is usually a NEG. (-) term which
CHRISTMAS is not.
People like “Albus” also upset me.
Why can’t people use (‘) when say spell like in the word “can’t” which he/she forgot to use 2 times in a short note.
Seems like “Albus” is the biggest whiner on here this morning. By the way, we’re not whining we are stating our opinions.
lou, a spelling cop on the internet, yup, a great addition.
acr, although it doesnt translate well (I didnt use an ‘ on purpose because I like lou) sarcasm is indeed in play.
By the way, some consider their postingst to be “opinions” others consider it whining plain and simple.
Hey lou, MERRY XMAS!!!!!
lou, some of us are Atheist so we prefer Xmas.
Apparently the X-MAS good will is nothing but a memory.
It’s the darkness getting to everybody…..right ?
arc,
in my world this is an opinion “I prefer the color red over the color blue because I find it more appealing to look at”
and this is a whine “darn city sucks when removing snow, they do the mayor’s street way faster than mine”
Of course all of that is my OPINION, such a great cop out :-)
oh, by the way lou
Xmas is a word.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Xmas
Wrong lou!
Xmas is the same as Christmas.
The âXâ is actually indicating the Greek letter âChiâ, which is short for the a word in Greek (that I can’t spell with my keyboard) when translated means Christ.
“”X” is usually a NEG. (-) term”
not always so especially when it comes to wives.
“let’s keep the “X” in Xmas!” Hooray.
Has anyone calculated what 30 pieces of silver invested at 6% compounded for 2000 years would amount to? If that had been done, we wouldn’t be celebrating “Xmas”, but would all work for Judas Industries, Ltd.
We do, sardonic.
Thanks for the laughs everyone :)
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thanks, socredible. Good point.
If there really were a Hell, I would want to end up there so I could spend eternity discussing politics with our current leaders in Ottawa.
Please everyone! Are you really going to end the year voicing senseless babble on this column??! Some of the comments are pathetic! How about trying to be a little more positive and constructive? Happy New Year everyone!
“How about trying to be a little more positive and constructive?”
You must be new here.
There isn’t anything senseless or pathetic about your comment mytwobits? Hmmmmm!
After all that turkey on “Xmas” and then a feast of rouladen on Boxing Day (I hope that’s still politically correct to say out loud), all I’m capable of handling is nonsense and babble.
Keep it coming people, keep it coming.
As an old Montreal Canadiens coach used to say. **Move dem skate, shoot dem puck**
Hear our wise government are trying to justify the carbon tax. It would be interesting if Evert, sociable and company would look into how much this Mann caused warming scam is costing and affecting world economies.
There is no science proving man affecting climate or that there is even a greenhouse effect. Anyhow borrowed this using Australia as an example of huge costs involved and for what, even if there is man caused warming.
“Pretend, ad argumentum, that the IPCCâs central estimate of 2.8 Cº warming by 2100 is true, and that Stern was right to say that the GDP cost of failing to prevent 3 Cº warming this century will be around 1.5% of GDP. Then, at the minimum 5% market inter-temporal discount rate, the cost of trying to abate this decadeâs predicted warming of 0.15 Cº by topical, typical CO2-mitigation measures as cost-ineffective as, say, Australiaâs carbon tax would be 48 times greater than the cost of later adaptation. At a zero discount rate, the cost of action will exceed the cost arising from inaction 36 times over.
How so? Australia emits just 1.2% of Manâs CO2, of which Ms. Gillard aims to cut 5% this decade. So Australiaâs scheme, even if it worked, would cutting just 0.06% of global emissions by 2020. In turn, that would cut CO2 concentration from a predicted 410 μatm to 409.988 μatm. It is this infinitesimal change in CO2 concentration, characteristic of all measures intended â however piously â to mitigate future warming that is the chief reason why there is no economic case for spending any money at all on mitigation today.
The tiny drop in CO2 concentration would cut predicted temperature by 0.00006 Cº. This pathetic result would be achieved at a cost of $130 billion, which works out at $2 quadrillion/Cº. Abating the 0.15 Cº warming predicted for this decade would thus cost $317 trillion, or $45,000/head worldwide, or 59% of global GDP.”
January, Feburay, March. Three more months to go for us to have to pay HST. Then after that the HST will be EXTINGUISHED. Next month after the HST is EXTINGUISHED we can throw out the LIE-berals. Then all these companies can start paying their share again, the same way they did since confederation. In May 2009 this province voted for gordo on the understanding that HST would not be installed. Had WE THE PEOPLE been told the truth, gordo and his henchmen would have been DEFEATED in numbers not seen since mulroney. So now finally this is going to be EXTINGUISHED. We won that referendum by majority, fair and square. And these LIE-BERALS keeping it here after WE THE PEOPLE won is absolutely going to decimate snooki in May. Happy new year everyone. April is going to be a big celebration in BC, when HST is EXSINGUISHED then an even bigger celebration WILL come in May after these LIE-berals are removed from office. Then the BC RAIL is inquiry is gonna toast em all again. These crooks need to be held accountable for their screwing the people of BC. Hopefully the new year will acomplish these things. Goodbye snooki, pat bell, bond. rustad, ida (wheres my fork) chong we will get rid of all of them.
Lou seems to have a language all of his own.
“goal” = 1.(in football, soccer, rugby, hockey, and some other games) A pair of posts linked by a crossbar and often with a net attached behind it,…
2.An instance of sending the ball or puck into or over this space, esp. as a unit of scoring in a game.
It means two things. If you use it only for the second instance, what is the term for the actual device used to determine whether a goal has been scored?
The Prince George Airport Authority projects a small increase in business from 2012 to 2016. Roughly 2% mostly based on increased passenger revenue, and a **small** increase in Cargo. So it doesnt appear that they are expecting any big influx of business.
The Airport Authority plans to increase the Airport Improvement Fee from $18.00 to $20.00 commencing Jan 1st 2014. This will increase thier AIF revenue by approx $400,000.00 per year. When the Airport Authority was originally established in 2000, the AIF was $2.00. So we have had, and will continue to get huge increases in these fee’s. Seems once you give these Government entities the authority to charge you without ever being responsible to the taxpayers, they just grind you down.
So in effect we have increased fee’s with the same or less service. This sounds like a formula for success.
wowww we doing a poll on who does the most bantering???
ohhh 108 in Burns??/ I totally agree.. we should get some of their gas.
Beautiful outside today uh.. Everything looks so nice and clean.
And it’s FRIDAY !!!!!!!!
“Then all these companies can start paying their share again, the same way they did since confederation”
It works this way.
Companies never pay their share. When you buy a service or a product from a company YOU pay their share for them. Always has been that way and always will be that way. If it were not that way, we would not have any companies unless they printed their own money.
Government will manipulate the system like smoke and mirrors thinking they can fine tune a system to encourage some changes. I still defy anyone to show that the HST made any change that caused the expected increase in business, reduced prices, increased jobs ANYWHERE in Canada where it has been introduced.
Itâs a fairytale.
The King yells,”OFF WITH HS HEAD!” To which the guy yells back, “MERCY!” And the king says to his friend, “I knew he was French. He said thank you”.
This guy is about to be hanged. The King asks, “Do you have any last words?” And the guy replies, “Yeah, I hope this rope works like everything else in this country”.
Happy New Year, y’all.
“Say goal when the puck/ball crosses the goal line into the net.”
So wouldnt that make it a “net line”?
;)
Would that be a “plunging net line” in water polo? :-D
I agree Gus we are dealing with a fairytale, however there is one small issue with the HST that was downplayed, and overlooked.
BC is an exporting Province, 80% of what we produce is exported, so that all costs, etc; that go into producing a product, are in the final analysis paid for by the consumers in foriegn Countries.
The producing companies had to pay taxes to the BC Government on some of thier costs of production (PST). Once they went to the HST they got tax credits for thier exports which were used to offset thier input costs, and WALLA they paid no tax. (Thats where the $1.6 Billion savings to business and corporations came in)
The Goverment of course had no intention of losing this tax revenue, so they decided to tax those (110 items) that were previously exempt from the PST. The exempt items generated some $800,000.00 per year for the Province.
Once the HST was defeated the Government had to re-implement the PST to maintain the amount of tax dollars they collect, and companies will now once again be paying this tax, however they will get thier money back from consumers in foriegn Countries, not from BC Consumers, so in fact we will not be paying this tax.
One could argue that we will pay this tax when we buy finished products made in China etc, and that may or may not be true, depending on where the product was made, and whose raw materials were used.
PS. Should read $800,000,000.00 no thousand.
ol’ Christy opened her mouth and inserted her foot when she said she’d rather be considered a MILF, than a Cougar. Oh I laughed, you gotta read the story in the Province. Priceless.
Have you heard of the new restaurant on the moon? The food is amazing, but I’ve heard its got no atmosphere…

Have you heard of the new restaurant on the moon? The food is amazing, but I’ve heard its got no atmosphere…
After HST is EXTINGUISHED the atmosphere will be vibrant. Should see this situation happening on ALL 110 items we are currently being screwed on. I really miss going to restaurants since july 2010. Can’t wait to start being able to eat out again without being screwed by HST.
mattyc… do you truly believe they will give up that revenue stream from restaurants or any of the others previously exempt?
The people may have voted to trash the HST to go back to a PST/GST system, but no where did the say they couldn’t alter the old system.
I wouldn’t be quite so cocky until after all is said and done.
Pylot,
common sense and reality just dont quite work in matty’s little world. Opps, I used a “‘”, now lou is going to think I am coming around.
I hate to spoil all the fun but drove up from Vancouver yesterday and the rooads were mostly bare. Got to PG city limits and you guessed it roads are as slick as the babies bum.
Happuyy New Year.
Cheers
oh PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put PST on restaurant food… The entertainment value alone will be worth it. ;)
Wow that was a fun read! I would like to wish all a Happy New year!
acrider54: If they did, they would just jack up the price to keep things even here.
Hello everyone, try to put on a happy attitude and have a safe, fun, New Year! And in Cree syllabics X is the word for Christ, so Christmas is the same however it is spelled.
Gus
2 posts connected with a cross bar and a net is called a GOAL NET NOT a goal.
When said puck or ball crosses the goal line into the goal net then is is a goal.
NoWay, here is “Christ” in Greek: ΧÏιÏÏÏÏ.
Albus
It was not (“”) I was talking about-
It was (‘) I was talking about.
Get it right.
Apparently a small ad was found in the Citizen on Saturday Dec.22/12 on page 7. I missed it as I was busy with the hustle and bustle of Xmas (Christmas) and couldn’t find the paper as I must have burnt it making my cozy fire Xmas day. The ad states there is a Community Forum at Vanway School THURSDAY DEC. 10 AT 7pm to provide all citizens of Prince George input into the official Community Plan bylaw amendment regarding Theraputic Communities.
I was in Burns Lake on Wednesday, and the gas was $1.02. That was a nice little Christmas gift for me! :)
The legislation that was passed by the Liberals states that the Government will return to the PST as it was prior to the implementation of the HST. The only exception was that private used car sales tax will stay at 12%.
So we are going back to the old system. There will be some changes in how the tax is reported, collected and paid, however that will have no impact on consumers.
So restaurent meals, coffee, etc; should go down by 7%, however who knows, maybe retailer, restaurantors, etc; will jack up thier prices to keep the HST. Would they do that????
If anyone is unable to attend the Community public meeting but would like to forward comments. Please forward any wriiten submissions by Jan.21,2013 to the

Palopu… at one time they also promised that the HST was not on their radar. Look how that turned out.
Yes I understand the difference between a promise and legislation (at least I hope I do), but these Liberals have been feeding us bovine droppings for so long, it’s hard to take them seriously on anything that passes through their lips.
Happy, do you mean to say January 10 and not December 10? And thanks, I missed that as well. Will definitely be showing up for that.
lou: “Albus

You play the anal grammar cop, then post this grade 3 failing attempt at a sentence?
FAIL!
FYI: A netminder in soccer is called the “Goal Keeper”. An official stat for hockey players is S.O.G. + Shots on GOAL.
A clueless wonder without a modicum of sports pedigree should be lecturing no-one on sports. Let alone grade three grammar.
Yes Thank you PeeGee. To make it crystal clear. Many P.G. residents are confused that the city of Prince George is CONSIDERING amendments or changes to the Official Community Plan in that most people believe it only pertain to the Haldi proprty BUT this in fact is UNTRUE. These changes to amend the OCP willbe seen in ALL areas of the city. I hope citizens will venture out west of the city to VANWAY ELEMENTAY SCHOOL Thursday JANUARY 10,2013 at 7PM
No reason for name calling.
250 check these people out.
I am getting abused here.
I run a small business (two actually) we will likely be raising our prices when it goes back to PST. We dropped them with HST. We set our profit margin and stick to it, otherwise, we don’t stay in business.
“I am getting abused here.”
There are a few that just don’t get it lou.
lou
your not near as brilliant as you think. If you reread my post you will see that I mentioned I had uses “‘” which if your count is 5 little stick things, but in yours you only used four little stick things.
If your going to be anal, you really should be a tad bit more of a perfectionist as well.
Ohhh no, lou is upset, he is calling for mods to hold his hand. And here I always thought that a spelling cop was held in the highest esteem :-)
Things that make you go hmmmm.
That fat guy standing at the end of the hockey rick with the big leg pads and huge gloves, I wonder why he is called a goaltender and not a net tender?
Things that make you go hmmmmmm.
One other thing that makes you go hmmmmmm.
A guy who gets upset because sportscasters done use what he thinks is proper english, a guy who gets upset when people done use (‘) in their spelling and a person who gets upset when people spell Xmas without the christ part, yet he cant even get his own name right.
Its Lou, not lou.
Come on, lets get consistent here, after all this is opinion 250 where all must be correct.
“your not near as brilliant as you think.”
Ouch.
Palopu,
the HST can be turned back to the way it was, then 1 day later if the government feels its appropriate then can simply add the 110 items to the PST list and wala, we are all paying 12% on everything anyways.
Well there at it, whats stopping them from making the pst 8% or 9%?
Johnny, I couldnt use (you’re) because, well, there is that little stick thing in there that I am diametrically opposed to.
“…whats stopping them from making the pst 8% or 9%?”
============================================
The wrath of the public. Tax people too much and they WILL revolt. Neither Party wants to risk that.
“2 posts connected with a cross bar and a net is called a GOAL NET NOT a goal.”
These retailers of soccer equipment, for instance, do not seem to agree with that.
http://www.soccersupplies.com/goalsnetsaccessories
The structure plus net is called a goal.
The net without the structure is called a goal net as opposed to a fishnet. The structure without the net could be called goalpost in some sports – in soccer for instance when the ball hits an upright.
English can be a difficult language.
So, did I tell you what my goal for tomorrow is? Spend a little more time on the NET. ;-)
little stick things?????? LOL
Apostrophe = ‘
Single quotation mark = ‘
Double quotation mark = “
Or, as some people call them, “upside down commas”
This is a little stick thingy …. | …. which is called a vertical bar and can typically found on the key which also has the backslash …..
Just sayin’ ….. ;-)
A news item today said that “just sayin'” is one of last year’s most hated phrases.
socredible
you know as well as I that if there is a raise in the PST it will be within a few short months AFTER the election.
Last years most hated phrases….”it is what it is” should be on that list.
Both Dix and Clark will undoubtedly be asked whether they plan to raise the PST after the election during the coming election campaign. Who is going to commit political suicide at that point and say it could be? Which one of them is going make Campbell’s mistake with the HST and lie to us? I don’t believe either are that quite that stupid.
Dix “once we got in power and had a good look at the books the Liberals left us in such a position that we have no choice but to raise the PST to 9%”
Clark “We promised a balanced budget in the last election, we are doing everything we can to lower the deficit. With the HST now gone we need other avenues to reach our goal. Today we announce the we have expanded the PST base by an estimated 110 items and as of July 1st the rate will increase to 9%. This is not something we have taken lightly, but its something that we feel we have to do”
Also to those who think that having the HST replaced will bring lower prices, dont think for one minute that there won’t be sweeping price increases at virtually every business. The HST provided some tax relief, that will be gone, business’s will have to recoup some of that lost profit. Hello price increases.
The whole debacle with the HST could’ve been avoided if that idiot Campbell had lowered the rate of the province’s portion to 5% from 7%. There would’ve still been objections to the extension of the tax to things not previously taxed, but they wouldn’t have outraged the public as they did if the overall rate had been lower.
Regardless, it was one of the worst examples of tax shifting ever set upon a people by ‘their’ government. It pointed out, if it needed to be pointed out, the utter moral bankruptcy of the BC Liberals.
The worst part of that is that the HST was a tax increase on Consumer spending at a time when an ever increasing part of that spending is coming from ‘borrowings’, and not just ‘earnings’. And those ‘borrowings’ are NOT, for an ever increasing number of British Columbians, for discretionary consumption, but now rather just to live.
If what you’re predicting comes true, Antiquus, it will be proof positive that there is NO fundamental difference between the BC Liberals and the BC NDP. And that a vote for either is a wasted vote, for it isn’t the PEOPLE that either will represent in making Policy, but a Policy made by Finance that they will impose on the People.
It shows just how far we’ve declined from the days when we had a group in office that clearly stated, “That which is physically possible, socially desirable, and morally correct can ALWAYS be made financially possible.” And moved to do just that, WITHOUT one tax increase after another. And went beyond simply balancing the Budget, too. What was done then, could be done now. Not exactly the same way, because times have changed. But done nevertheless, if people DEMAND it be done.
Were there ever any price decreases? I have yet to see any price decreases since the HST came in.
Price increases, if any, will likely be miniscule at best when the HST is gone.
Don’t forget that with PST the taxation paid on new machinery and equipment is still recovered by the business through that tax’s inclusion in Capital Cost Allowance deductions from Income Tax.
And HST will no longer be payable on raw materials and semi-manufactures, which reduces the cash outlay for both by 7% at the time of payment. Not at the time of HST remission, some time later, when what was paid becomes an Input Tax Credit.
And that tax will no longer apply on a host of things it now applies to, including the cost of a contractor’s labor in new house and other project’s construction.
As Palopu said earlier, with the return to PST foreigners receiving our exports will again pay their fair share as part of that tax’s inclusion as a component of price. This is only right, for they are receiving these exports courtesy of a lot of infrastructure provided by British Columbia, and they should be paying for that.
The Universe is vast and we are so small. There is really only one thing that we can ever truly control – whether we are good or evil. Have a Happy New Year everyone, Something to ponder about….. ~*~
