Your BC RCMP…There’s an App For That

Sunday, December 30, 2012 @ 3:55 AM

Prince George, BC – Want the latest news from the BC RCMP?  There’s an app for that…

The RCMP have launched an application for iPhone and iPad users, providing easy mobile access to information like news releases, missing person, wanted persons and even the RCMP’s Twitter account.

"In this day and age, people are so connected to their mobile phones and tablets, we wanted to make it easy for them to connect with us," says Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens, Commanding Officer for the RCMP in BC.

Callens says this initial app is for iPhone and iPad and is free to download in the App Store, but mobile applications for Android and Blackberry users are currently under development.

"It’s all there in one easy application."

Want the latest news from the BC RCMP?

Nope …. I am not into apps. They clutter up my screen. Give me google plus the ability to pick my own key words, and I will pass on the apps created by others fro others. ;-)

Despite what you or I or the rest of the ‘older crowd’ thinks, apps are the way of the world these days. Millions of people use them on their smart phones and tablets. I happen to think it’s a good idea.

Screen clutter? There’s an app for that!

so it is useless in other words……jus like the cops..

ipad and iphone only? This is discrimination against all us non apple fans! someone contact the human rights tribunal; I’m being repressed here! :)

“Screen clutter? There’s an app for that!”

It’s called right click on mouse with cursor on desktop, scrolling cursor down to “restore desktop” and left click.

I am sorry, I do not use smart phones and tablets. When I am out, I talk to people the old fashioned way, sitting across the table from them. There is no app for that ….. yet!!

;-)

zyblxteu……

“cops are useless”????

OK so next time you have your car ripped off, get mugged, or have someone in your family assulted……call a street junkie!

Will it make them show up less than 45 minutes after they’re called when reporting strangers loading property from your neighbors house?

A Smartphone is the one you have at home ,wired to the Wall, all the others just sucking Money out of your Wallet, are you that much in demand that you have to be reached anywhere any time ? Friends coming over and the first thing they do after stepping into the House, checking for Messages , have we gone Nuts?

“OK so next time you have your car ripped off”

Had the car broken into in our driveway on several occasions some years back. Car was locked. Broke rear window to gain entry all three times. Stuff in glovebox and center console spead all over the front of the car. Nothing gone since there was nothing worthwhile in the car.

Cops did not give a hoot. They do the same with store breakins. Windows damaged? … who cares. $7,000 inventory gone in a 2 minute smash and grab …. not worth it … long gone …. sorry … it’s the cost of doing business or leaving a car, locked, in the driveway. Keep it unlocked and they will at least not break the glass.

I am a supporter of the police, but I had the same experience as Gus. Locked car was broken into, damaged, cheap stereo stolen. Cops gave me a file number over the phone and told me to call ICBC.

I’m sure this happens hundreds if not thousands of times per year in PG. The police don’t have enough resources to investigate every minor car smash and grab. And we wonder why insurance rates keep going up! ;-)

All this texting back and forth, up and down, and sideways, is pure BS. I agree with Outwest.

People are highly overrating thier self importance. They do strange things to make themselves feel important. As an example who would drive like a maniac to get to Timmies to sit in line and wait for a coffee??? Hurry up and slow down.

90% of the information texted back and forth is drivel, and totally meaningless babble.

The winners of course are the companies who con people into buying thier products.

“All this texting back and forth, up and down, and sideways, is pure BS.”

Careful. Your age is showing.

Gus, cops do not normally attend theft from vehicles, but they do attend all commercial and residential break and enters. To say they don’t give a hoot about people getting their car windows smashed out is inaccurate. It comes down to time constraints, the police can’t physically attend every theft from vehicle, especially in a town like PG. :)

Who cares about theft from venicles? There was nothing to steal in my case. There was partial destruction of property. It was a break and enter. I forget whether I had to pay my deductible to ICBC. I suspect I did.

Ladysmith RCMP seem to be able to handle such cases. At least they come out to have a look and in some cases investigate.

Maybe we need a report such as that for a while to see what goes on in this town.

SO let us get back to this app…..

“The RCMP have launched an application for iPhone and iPad users, providing easy mobile access to information like news releases, missing person, wanted persons and even the RCMP’s Twitter account.”

Seems to be all about RCMP sending messages to people ……

How about an app to send messgaes FROM people to the RCMP with a handy selection tool to report incidents.

Select “car break in”
enter such info as location, contact phone, damage, approx time, approx damage, items taken, etc. … hit send …. and both of us have the star of some documented information …..

the response might be as little as “go to ICBC”

If enough of that happens, they can see the activity on a “smart” map which might assist them with hunting a person or more down.

It can be relatively automated. Does not have to be monitored by a human unless there are key words or categories which would send the info to a human monitor.

If that is what they would be doing, then we would have a newsworthy item. This stuff is just a PR exercise having nothing to do to remove PG from the top of the crime list.

$20+ million is going to pay for the service. We need to have a bit more involvement with monitoring the effectiveness of what they do. Maybe the system of having an elected commissioner of police and police commission as they have in the USA is not such a bad idea.

Gus, not sure the city of Ladysmith is necessarily the best comparison with pg. Ladysmith is nothing like our city and they are fortunate enough to give the citizens that level of service. I think the new app is likely a waste of time also and will be a failure. I like your idea about electing a commissioner as they do in the US. The problem with our current system is that the commissioner is essentially hand picked by the federal government and I believe is given a deputy minister status. This means the Paulson works more for Vic Toews and less for his members and the people he is sworn to serve. Your app idea is interesting but would be difficult to implement. My previous point to you was that the police would like to attend these theft from vehicles but they don’t have the time.
