Cariboo Cougars In Quarter Finals At Mac’s Tournament

Calgary, AB — A 7-2 win over the Edmonton SSAC Athletics Sunday has sent the Cariboo Cougars to the Mac’s Midget Tournament quarterfinals.

The dominating victory in their final round-robin game earned the Cougars first place in their pool as they get set to face Pirati Chumotov from the Czech Republic Monday.

The Cats scored two goals less than a minute apart midway through the first to take a 2-0 lead as Eli Jarvis and Kirk Hards once again hit the scoresheet. Braiden Epp scored his first of two late in the period on the power play to put the Cats up 3-0 after 20 minutes.

Tyler Povelofskie made it 4-0 with just under five minutes to go in the second while Epp scored his second from Liam Blackburn at the 17:53 mark as the Cougars took a 5-0 lead into the final period.

Brad Morrison made it a six goal lead scoring on the power play assisted by Epp and Blackburn six minutes into the final frame. The Athletics finally got on the board midway through the third with a power play goal but less than a minute later the Cats restored the six goal lead as Morrison tallied again on the man advantage.

Edmonton added a late goal on the power play with just under two minutes to go.

The Cats finished round-robin play 3-0-1 going undefeated for the first time at the tournament in team history. The Cougars finished round-robin play with the most goals for of any team with 25 and the best goal differential at plus 15.

Monday’s quarterfinal with Pirati Chumotov is set for 9:00am MT at Father Bauer Arena. The winner will face either the Red Deer Chiefs or the Vancouver NW Giants in a semi-final at 3:00pm.
