Getting Set for the Return of the PST
Thursday, January 3, 2013 @ 3:58 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Business can now register for their PST number as the Province prepares to extinguish the HST and bring back the GST and PST.
There are three ways a business can register:
- Online – go to: www.gov.bc.ca/etaxbc/register Online registration should take about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.
- In person – go to the nearest Service BC Centre.
- By mail or fax – complete the Application for Registration for Provincial Sales Tax (FIN 418) found here.
Businesses also can get the form at the nearest Service BC Centre, or by calling 1 877 388-4440 to have one mailed to you. Mail or fax the completed form to the address or fax number shown on the form, along with the
appropriate documentation.
A new PST number will be assigned once the business registration application is processed.
The Province has a website set up which should help answer any questions you may have about the return to the PST.
The Prince George Chamber of Commerce will be holding a fee seminar for its members on the 27th of February to help businesses prepare. That seminar is 2 hours in length and will held at the CILA Boardroom at 201-2666 Queensway. Businesses should pre-register with the Chamber of Commerce if they plan to attend.

They should be sending the bill for this to the people who signed the petition.
I agree ax man. I hope they peg the PST at 9% and then the masses will be screaming.
They should be sending the bill for this to the liars and cheats that decided to blindside everyone in this province. They did not have the guts to at least inform citizens what they were voting for in May 2009. Get them cash registers reprogrammed now and do what WE THE PEOPLE voted for and get this HST EXTINGUISHED. Then get out and vote and EXTINGUISH the liberals.
Kinda figured mattyc would include his usual dribble on this story. Nothing new here. Would love to see the liberals win just to watch this idiot go really ballistic. Might convince him to move to Alberta.
bonneville, I can’t believe that you called mattyc an idiot!
You are far too polite, haha!
The PST will go back to 7%., At least for the time being. All the Corporations who thought they (in conjunction with the Campbellites) had pulled a fast one on the consumers in BC, will now have to continue to pay the PST. No one will shed a tear for these corporate welfare bums.
The people who were in favour of the HST never really understood what was taking place from the get go.
They can take the President of the Chamber of Commerce (Winters) quote.
**It will be a cold day in hell before the HST is eliminated in BC**
as an indication of how out to lunch the supporters of this tax really were.
This tax was never really about small business, it was all about saving money from huge exporting corporations. Much like the implementation of the GST. Problem is small business was offered a few **cookies** while the corporations got a whole iced cake, and they fell for the Liberal BS. Consumers on the other hand, who were offered nothing, at least had the gonads to put the run on the Government, and save the day.
Now that those who supported the tax lost, all they can do is lick thier wounds, and hope the worst for those who opposed the tax.
Such is life.
Have a nice day.
HST…Prices went up, not down..Jobs were lost, not gained, HST revenue neutral was a big BC Government lie.

wow all of the tinfoil hat club is out on this one – lol
ah well, lets take a step backwards and let them think they won something. At the end of the day this will cost us all more – sigh

Which raises the question, why are we taxed so heavily? Easy answer, the government needs the money. And where does that money go? Most of it goes to pay the salaries and benefits of our over bloated public work force.
What’s the solution? We need to make a serious reduction in the number of people who are collecting pay cheques courtesy of the tax payer. Our current system is not sustainable.
Interceptor. Dont take a step backward you might fall off the fiscal cliff.
If people stopped the Government from selling out to Corporate interests even for one day it is a victory.
Implementing tax breaks for corporations was not the reason that the Liberals were elected. The Liberals are corporate stooges, the NDP are incapable of runnng a business, or a Government.
The people of BC are stuck with the worst of both worlds. Dont know what the answer is, but more of the same, will put us all in the poor house. You cannot under any circumstances, reward bad behaviour in politics, because if you do, you will get more of the same.
The Liberals have bankrupted BC. Wait until you see thier next budget. This will show thier true colors. It will probably be called the slippery sliddy budget, as they try to convince us that all is well.
Its a sad day indeed when a whole Province has nothing to vote for than wannabe leaders, and losers.
“The people of BC are stuck with the worst of both worlds.”
We dont see eye to eye often Palupo, but I couldnt agree more on that one :)
When was the PST going to come back? April first? Be wary, be very wary.
Right, and don’t forget mattyc also gave instructions on how to vandalize parking meters, if and when installed. Great advice from a supposed adult, concerned about tax rates. How many tax dollars will it take to replace the ones you put out of commission with bubblegum and crazy glue, moron.
A tv program had experts answer questions from the public regarding politic and one question from BC was why do politician lie to the public. The answer, they don’t lie we just don’t understand what it is like to run a government. Of course the experts weren’t from BC where Campbell had “the lie” down pat. I will not say the Liberals lied except that the BC Liberals are not Liberals – first lie,
more lies until the final one that broke the camels back; “I won’t bring in HST”. What I don’t understand is why people kept electing Campbell after his first big lie -I will not sell BC Rail. I don’t know how people believed that one when in the previous election he had said that he would sell it and he lost so he learnt his lesson – just lie and do what you want when you are elected.
Graymare, people kept electing Campbell after his lies simply for the love of money that mean green stuff will always win out over anything else in our society. After it was proven over and over that they are not exactly the best caretakers of our money, they may face defeat, but it is not etched in stone that this will happen.
“Now that those who supported the tax lost, all they can do is lick thier wounds”
and cry!
Man there are a lot of sheeple posting these days.
“What’s the solution? We need to make a serious reduction in the number of people who are collecting pay cheques courtesy of the tax payer. Our current system is not sustainable.”
LMAO! Ya, it has nothing to do with Liberal mismanagement.
Have you finished paying the 40 million to Telus because Patty boy and his partners reneged on their renaming BC Place deal?
One small example from a huge list.
“Have you finished paying the 40 million to Telus because Patty boy and his partners reneged on their renaming BC Place deal?”
Good grief. Nobody is paying Telus 40 million dollars. Telus was going to pay 40 million over 20 years for the naming rights to BC Place but the deal fell through.
Dragon calling others sheeple – ahahahaha
pot —-> kettle
but hey, you know what they say about arguing on the internet
I’m the furthest thing from being a sheeple.

The Telus deal was done then cancelled by everyone’s fav govt. Telus spent millions on upgrades inside the stadium. Do you really think they walked away unscathed?
from the wiki page – “The term is used to describe those who voluntarily acquiesce to a suggestion without critical analysis or research. They undermine their own individuality and may willingly give up their rights.”
Sounds alot like a union member or someone who voted against the HST eh? ;)
“The Telus deal was done then cancelled by everyone’s fav govt. Telus spent millions on upgrades inside the stadium. Do you really think they walked away unscathed?”
I’m sure Telus was adequately compensated for the work they did. That doesn’t equate to giving them 40 million dollars because the government opted not to give them naming rights.
So those businesses that barter are not cheats either? Why can a special interest group barter with a local web design company? When one barters they are also not paying their fair share of taxes?
Ladies and Gentlemen;
This is not the way I wanted to start this new year.
The name calling and bullying must stop, or privileges will be revoked.
This is not a “chat line”, it is open for your comments on the issues at hand, the name calling will not be tolerated. And may I remind you, there is no tolerance for bad language either.
Elaine Macdonald
How is one that barters any different than a multinational corporation that inhouses their accounting, and therefor pays no HST on the accounting function that a small business does have to pay HST on?
Its all just a matter of corporate structure… to avoid paying the tax.
Lets all hope all those ‘small business’ smart types that are pro HST hurry up and pay their accounting bill for their year end prior to April 1st. The joke is on them this year… hahahaha
” Its a sad day indeed when a whole Province has nothing to vote for than wannabe leaders, and losers.”

But people will still vote. And as long as over 50% who are eligible do, this gives legitimacy to an election that will really change nothing, other than possibly the personnel who will choose the METHODS by which exactly the SAME Policy will be imposed on us.
A Policy that few of us, if we really understood it, would ever vote for. For it simply means, for most of us, further increases in our cost of living with no where near commensurate increases in our standard of living. And for many, an actual decline in their standard of living.
If there is no credible alternative to the BC Liberals or the BC NDP, and neither of those Parties are willing to try to secure for us what the majority of citizens really want from their government,i.e., a rising standard of living with a falling cost of living, for all, then why play their game and give one or the other a mandate to screw us further?
If enough people threatened to boycott the polls so that the election could have no legitimacy, I think we’d quickly see some meaningful change in Party platforms.
Prices will rocket even higher when the PST arrives. Tax will rocket as well because we have to pay for more offices, new equipment, inspectors, yes men and the list is endless. My business prices will rise about 7 percent until they raise it to 10 percent — after that my prices rise 12 percent. In total a 19 percent increase just to keep the business running in the same profit range. You people who voted for this will rue the day because every business will get the extra they need from you; the voters. I’m betting on booze and cigs going up too. I can hardly wait for the complaing about the rising cost of living buit at least I can say “I told you so”. Some consolation huh?

On the government website it states that professional fees, except legal fees are exempt. I could be wrong it happened once before.
Bartering between business’s is legal as long as the transactions are recorded and the taxes paid.
I’m sure that you have always paid taxes and have never been involved in an “under the table transaction”.
I think you should look at the Vanderzalm math –
1. 7%pst plus 5%gst is less than 12%hst.
2. Two administrations are cheaper than one.
The people of BC voted for this.
Assuming that items taxed under both systems are the same, (meals. haircuts, etc.) there will be a zero in the equation to make the collection of taxes equal under both systems.
Cost of collection – not so much.
I have to agree with you traveller (and others). Switching back to the archaic PST/GST will cost consumers more in the end. The costs of switching back plus administration will be passed onto you and me in hidden costs.
The HST was a superior system implemented poorly. Too bad many don’t understand this.
Boomer you didn’t answer my question. I asked how is bartering any different than a large corporate conglomerate doing in house transfer pricing or costing for services provided within the organization.
Canfor does not pay HST on its own internal accounting services, but they do if they contract it out.
I think you read the government web site wrong. Can you provide a link to your assertion. From what I understand lawyer fees are exempt from HST, but not other professional services. The lawyers making up the tax policy ensured they were exempt… an outrage.
It will be interesting to see if accounting firms hold back billing till after April 1st to avoid charging the HST, or if tax regulators will be watching to see if the system is being played.
