Prince George, B.C.- The Canada Winter Games 2015 Society has put its business plan out to the public. This is the first time a Games Society has done this, and it is something 2015 Games CEO Stu Ballentyne says is part of their promise to be open and transparent. A 34 page highlights package can be accessed here.

The Games have a budget of about $46.5 million dollars . That amount includes 19 million in capital expenses, and 27 million in operating expenses. While $35 million has been secured from the three levels of Government, the balance will have to be raised through ticket sales, merchandise sales, and sponsorships. So nearly $12 million will have to  be raised by the Winter Games Society.

Among the highlights are hints of the Games Festival, which will feature Canadian talent,  daily family entertainment, the Canada Games Cauldron will be located in the Canada Games Plaza (currently the Civic Plaza), there will be  an opportunity for the Games torch to be carried across the country , starting in Ottawa and making its way across the country to engage people in all provinces. The Games celebrations will  tie into the City’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

Hot off the heels of discussing child poverty in B.C.   Councillor Dave Wilbur noted many people will not be able to afford to attend the Games. Ballentyne says he is hopeful many of the tickets will be sponsored in order to provide tickets to people who could not otherwise attend the games, he says his goal is to ensure the venues are full.

Merchandising is very important to the Games fund raising efforts. Ballentyne says some Games merchandise, will be available  by the end of March this year.

Are u kidding me, cant afford to go? Every mill in this town is looking for people. The problem is to many flipping free handouts no one wants to work for there money.
Im sure they’ll be handing out free ones to all the people who cant “afford” tickets while the rest of us will have to pay for over priced tickets.

“Every mill in this town is looking for people”

So many mills are left in town compared to those that were here say 10 years ago?

Unless one has kids in the events, or kid who are involved in such sports and want to see them, there will be few others who will be interested in attending any of the events.

As they said, the typical problem is filling the seats so that the cameras will make it look like the events are well attended to the rest of the country who might be watching.

“The problem is to many flipping free handouts no one wants to work for there money.”

I have a bit of a different take on that. The days of hiring people at the bottom without high school completion are over. Companies got stuck with too many like that as automation took over more and more and those running the machinery needed better qualifications.

I know at one time there was a major problem with technical and even math literacy required to bring people to a level required for new job categories.

So, as much as people are talking about financial poverty, the talk about poverty of technical knowledge is just as important since that is one of the tools to lift people out of financial poverty.
