Caledonia Nordic Ski Club biathletes Sarah Beaudry, Emily Dickson and Arthur Roots have qualified to represent Canada at the Biathlon World Youth Junior Championships to be held January 23rd to February 2nd in Obertilliach Austria.
The trio made the team after three days of National selection races in Canmore Alberta this past week.
Eighteen year old Sarah Beaudry, who has trained in Canmore with the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre since graduating from Duchess Park in 2012 won gold in all three of her selection races in the Youth Woman category while fighting a cold to solidly earn her place on the four person team. Sarah has competed in previous World Youth Championships in both 2011 and 2012.
Teammate Emily Dickson, who is in grade 10 at DP Todd Secondary won Bronze in Saturdays Sprint competition and followed up with a sixth place in Sundays Mass Start event and a 6th in Tuesdays Mass Start race to earn fourth spot on the Youth Women team.
Sarah and Emily will be joining fellow BC athlete Julia Ransom of West Kelowna who had prequalified for the Junior Women’s category of the Canadian team.
For the Youth Men’s team, eighteen year old DP Todd graduate Arthur Roots, also training in Canmore with the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre, won the fourth spot in a very tight field of 26 competitors with a Bronze medal in Saturdays sprint competition, a fifth place in Sundays Mass Start race and a fifth place in Tuesday’s race. Racing among the youth men was extremely tight with any of the top eight able to qualify going into the last race and Arthur’s consistent results earned him a well deserved spot. Arthur will be joining fellow BC athlete Jasper Mackenzie of West Kelowna who qualified in the fourth position of the Junior Men’s team.
Sarah, Emily and Arthur are all eligible to represent BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games to be held in Prince George in 2015.
