Prince George, B.C. – The Chilliwack Chiefs scored three goals, all on the power play, to edged the Prince George Spruce Kings 3-2 in overtime Friday night in BCHL action in Chilliwack.
The Kings were penalized 8 times, Chilliwack six, as the clubs played a tight-checking game that also featured plenty of glorious scoring chances at the Prospera Centre in the Fraser Valley. And Spruce Kings head coach Dave Dupas didn’t hesitate in the post-game comments in knocking the referees for some terrible calls that really made a huge difference in deciding the outcome of the contest. He said one ref even admitted blowing a call that led to Chilliwack’s tying goal late in the third period.
Here’s how it went. Chilliwack led 1-0 after one, as Spencer Graboski scored on the power play at 12:36 of the first. The Spruce Kings squared things, also on the power play, at 7:17 of the second as Lyndon Martell potted one, assisted by Coltyn Hansen and Shayne Morrissey. The Kings took the lead at 11:05 of the third when Hansen scored unassisted while Prince George was shorthanded. Then the refs missed a blatant penalty as Martel was hauled down and that was followed by a tripping call to Kevin Guiltinan of the Kings at 18:02, when the Chiefs player had actually stepped on Guiltinan’s stick. Graboski capitalized on the power play with his second of the game at 19:09, tying it a 2-2 and sending the contest to overtime.
The Kings’ Bryant Christian was sent off for hooking at 1:58 and Philip Zielonka scored the winner for the Chiefs, on the power play, at 2:49.
Chilliwack outshot Prince George 35-34 as both Mitch Gillam for the Chiefs and Kirk Thompson for the Kings played great in the nets.
Elsewhere Surrey edged Penticton 2-1. So the Mainland Division standings have Surrey on top with 50 points, Chilliwack 48, the Kings pick up a point and have 43, Langley 36 and Coquitlam trails.
Saturday night the Kings take on the Coquitlam Express.
