Native Protest Rally Planned For Prince George

Saturday, January 12, 2013 @ 8:36 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The national Idle No More movement spearheaded by the country’s aboriginal movement has a rally planned for Prince George today.

Organizers say the gathering will take place at the Civic Centre Plaza at 2 o’clock this afternoon. The rally has been called to draw attention to federal legislation which the native community says erodes native rights. As well, Carrier Sekani Tribal Council Chief Terry Teegee says it is meant to bring forward concerns about the underfunding of education and the need for more economic development to spur employment in aboriginal communities.

This afternoon’s event is to include a march at 2:45pm led by elders, chiefs, drummers and singers.

Those planning on attending are advised to bundle up warmly. The forecast high today is minus 12, without the windchill.

The system is broken for sure! The only solution is getting rid of Reservations! I would like to hear more stories about FN people who live off reserve, pay taxes and are successful! There are many!!I know several myself, and they are successful because they have made that break!

There are very well of native communities in BC and Ontario, the one in Ontario is doing well in agriculture, the one in BC has been turned around by good leadership, but you don,t hear about them. It seems like they are not mentioned becuase they undermine the movement

Too bad it couldn’t coincide wth a pre-planned jobfair at the Civic Centre. Win win.

exactly right cougs78.i’ve worked with some guys that figured out they would have a better standard of living if they went their own way and worked.some of them did very well .

Just look to the Okanagan area for good stories. They gave those dumb Indians a bunch of rock and desert and now it is all condos, shopping malls and wineries!!!

At first I thought Idle No More was a government campaign to curb idling cars.

Then I found out it had something to do with Indians and I hoped it meant Indians would be “Idle No More” and go get jobs and start paying taxes.

Then I found it was some chief eating soup because she blew a couple mil and wanted more.

Then I was like, whatever.

You said it Denaljo, exactly right.

Denaljo is bang on! Look at Nk’mp in Osoyoos.

Everybody needs to remember that the courts just added 600,000 Metis and others to the ranks of the idle.

Can you say “time to get a 2nd job so we can afford aven more handouts”?

What is wrong with expecting everyon to contribute??

I agree Denaljo, but I would take issue with the word “dumb”. I think they are the smart ones! I also agree with Contiqu, Clarence Louis has done something with that Osoyoos land instead of waiting for a gov cheque!

It’s time the taxpayers of this country start having rallies and blockades to protest this nonsense. You never see a well laid out plan as to what the Indians want or how they propose to make things better, it’s always about ‘give us more’. Underfunded education???? It’s 2013 for gods sake, in order to get ahead in this life you need to get an education. Traditional schools and learning how to make a drum aren’t going to get you anywhere!!! The schools are already there natives just have to attend!!! And I’m sure the post secondary education is free for them…..so where is the underfunding. Spur economic growth in aboriginal communities?? Code words for send us more money to piss away on nonsense. Time to rise up Canada…. Enough is enough

Eroded native rights, well the chiefs realize its their rights being eroded by bringing democracy to the reserves. It is sad how the common native are being played by their so called leaders.

I agree Number4, it’s time for our own rallies. Perhpas we can use your words. Let’s have an “Enough is enough” rally. Time to stop the handouts. Offer a hand up instead!
I’d like to know how much some of our local Native leaders are “paid” each year. I didn’t use the word “earn” because I’m not so sure that some of them earn what they are paid.

One of our region’s most prominent Native leaders recently posted some pictures on Facebook from the last Idle No More protest at the courthouse. One picture showed a young native man holding a poster that said in big bold letters “Stephen Harper can suck my dick for a cheeseburger”. I phoned and left a message for this Native leader, suggesting that I thought that this picture and comment was disrespectful and shameful. I also commented that I thought it was pretty pathetic that a Native leader would consider it appropriate to post a picture like this on their Facebook page and perhaps I would notify the local media so that they could question the Native leader about their reasons for thinking this was appropriate. I checked the Facebook page and hour or so later, and lo and behold, the picture had been removed. Was the Native leader a little worried that the local media would see the post. I’ll leave that up to you to decide! How much is this leader being paid?? Pretty sad!

Why is everybody getting their panties in a knot? It’s a peaceful protest isn’t it??

The amount of ignorance from some of your comments makes me both sick and enraged. Do some research before you pretend you know what you’re talking about, and leave the blatantly racist comments out of it.
I’m non-aboriginal and I will be heading downtown and enduring the cold to show my solidarity this afternoon. It’s not about handouts, its about the continual lack of respect from our government for First Nations rights that are outlined in our constitution and by the United Nations.

When are we going to see a protest against corrupt Chiefs? Or is that racist to mention that?

Protest against corrupt chiefs?! Probably about the same time we do something about corrupt politicians. Or is that a redundant statement???

It really looks like we live in a World of Entitlements , has anyone figured out were the Money is coming from . No we just Print more.

Follow the money! That’s all the whities are asking. Show where you spent the money and by asking that we are racist. Put up blockaids, stop the trains and see what happens. The white rats might get backed too far into the corner and come out biting!

Idle no More is a great theme. My first thoughts were about going to work. Everyone needs to work. Everyone needs to create value. Everyone needs to be appreciated. Everyone needs to produce something of value that others either want or need and are willing to pay for. How’s that coming?

I am full blood first nation, most of my family is born and raised off reserve. I can understand why folks are getting frustrated over the first nations plight,I too have always felt that.
I`v mentioned this in a prior scroll that I have been to many first nations reserves and have had an opportunity to speak to people in a position to see what happens to certain government misappropriated funds.
Such as,Check signers signing extra pay checks for them selves,
Money that is meant to be spent on care of elders on and off reserve,
Money earmarked for start up/small business grant so grossly mismanaged that most people would be doing time in jail for.
I cant say where this information originated because unfortunately for us first nation and non first nations alike know it`s always the whistle blower and not the person or persons that should be prosecuted.

Now there are issues the idle no more movement that have merit, that the federal government is trying to slide legislation through with out consulting any of the people it would effect. This has happened for time immemorial, how else would there be what they call old money in this country, bootleg money.
This is effecting first nations and non first nations.

As for reserves I agree that this is not the life for anyone, would you like to make yourself a ward of a government that already lies to you.
Some of this legislation would also mean that there would not be any more consultation “only ceremonial” for oil companies or mines to lay tracts of land to be used to lay pipe lines or destroy, not to be used again for generations for slag or toxic waste that they corporations would like to get rid of at low cost to them but at a very high cost to our environment.

Bang on servant.

As those who are leading the efforts to idle no more are saying according to the above reprot: “bring forward concerns about the underfunding of education and the need for more economic development to spur EMPLOYMENT in aboriginal communities.”

They are thinking just like you! Great that you are showing them support! ;-)

I also agree that there should be a complete audit of all first nations registries so that everyone can finally see the misappropriations of funding.

man when this issue comes up you should see the regrouping of chief and counsel to try to deflect the blame off of them.

What is a true blood real Native?? I feel they are entitled to whatever they have coming. I am not sure about third and fourth generation Metis. If you are Metis and can trace your blood line to a Band that is going to be getting all this Government money through land claims ,oil ,gas , mining, whatever. Are you going to receive your fair share?

Bitter–hahahahaha. Your dreaming!! It’s been a couple hundred years and most BC Bands don’t even have treaties, how do you suppose Metis and non-status are going to fare after a couple hundred years of political patti-cake?

Jim; You missed my point, If you could trace you roots to a Band that has done well like NK’mp in Osoyoos and you are Metis are you entitled to part of the profits. Just wondering. Has nothing to do with treaties.

heyyyyy whatever happened to all this talk bout City staff and snow plowing???? Ohh yeahhhh forgot… this week’s bout First Nations…

Anyhow, if anybody cares, my street just FINALLY got plowed today. No more bumps in the road.. Guess we’ll be paying more taxes for them to be working weekends

Still no sight of plow or loader here..

Spencetor, once again, use the same old vague ‘We are hard done by’. Argument. Why don’t YOU explain how these people are soooo mistreated. You can’t because they aren’t. The mistreatment comes from their own bands etc. why don’t you spend some time investigating that. And how and the hell do you explain the use of civil disobedience and law breaking to get a point across……your points of view are part of the problem..it’s NOT racist

Bitter–the short answer is not likely. Many Metis have no close band ties, and there are big questions around what the ruling will bring, if anything. There is already a court ruling that was supposed to extend status to those losing status under C-35 and the federal government isn’t doing it. So there is no reason to expect anything to change IMHO

Spencetor please educate me, and not some generalization chant.

Did our city open up the Civic Centre so these protesters could warm their tootsies?

There should be another Idle no more.. And that is to make everyone that is able to work get a job and stop idling on welfare.

these 1st nation people where tricked…they thought this was where they picked up their welfare cheques….

Cold enough for ya? Should be. I pay a carbon tax to slow down global warming and or climate change. Got a permit for those open fires?

HO hum! Is Wolverine out of jail?

I don’t think the politicians including Harper really want the Idle No More movement to fail because it is an excellent place to sifon more tax payers cash and blame the natives for the short-fall. In fact the Idle No More movement is doing alarmingly well. I just hope it brings about change.
