Who Do You Think is a Great Volunteer

Sunday, January 13, 2013 @ 8:41 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The City wants to honour those who make a tremendous, volunteer effort to make our community a better place in which to live.

So it’s asking you for your ideas on individuals who have made outstanding contributions for others. A number of awards are to be presented at the April 27th Civic Appreciation dinner. There are four categories of award: Recreation and Culture, Community Service, Youth of the Year and the Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Nominations are being accepted until closing time March 4th, 2013 and can be dropped off at City Hall. You can get more information at (250)561-7640 or at

There are almost 170 organizations identified on the linked list which depend on volunteers to run at the level which they provide service to the community.
I wish every single one could put in the name that they would like to put forward from their organization and that the list would be published for all in the community to see who the volunteers in this community are.

Of course, there are many more who volunteer on their own rather through an organization. In addition, most of us probably know of organizations which are not on the list. I think conspicuously absent are those who volunteer to sit on City advisory committees and the Boards of many of the organizations listed.

I think four categories is insufficient to give recognition to people who volunteer in the community. Luckily, to receive such recognition is not why people volunteer.

I think we also have to make sure that those who are the community’s philanthropists and give money rather than time are recognized separately.

I agree gus that there should be more categories.

The good news is that this city has so many citizens that deserve recognition and that is what makes this city so great.

Thank you to all who volunteer!

There can be more than one person recognized per category, it depends on how many people are nominated, and if they fit the criteria under each category.
So please get busy and nominate someone.
The process is simple and a nice way to show appreciation.
