Canada Games Test Event At Tabor Mountain

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 @ 3:51 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The new snowboard cross course at Tabor Mountain will undergo its first pre- Canada Winter Games test event on Sunday February 3rd.

Tabor Mountain is the venue for snowboard cross, half pipe and slope style events for the 2015 Winter Games.   The event on February 3rd is open, so all age categories can take part.

This will be a sanctioned race and that means participants can gain race points they can put towards their overall standings and rankings in B.C. This is especially important for those who are hoping to make it on to Team BC.

"This is one of many competition events Prince George will see over the next two years,” says Lisa Shaw-Maclaren, manager of Sport and Venue Preparation. “For the 2015 Canada Winter Games, we need to ensure that all courses and venues meet the required national standard for competition and this is part of that process."

Testing a venue provides an opportunity to tweak runs, give officials the chance to train, as well as provide a home advantage for local athletes when the Games get underway.

In order for the event to be successful and future races in the north to succeed, participation from both athletes and officials is key. "As this is the first time a BC sanctioned event has been hosted north of Kamloops, we may see lower participation levels, explains Shaw-Maclaren.”However, it also gives our local and regional athletes and recreational riders the chance to try out a sport they may be talented in, and have never had the chance to compete in before. Plus, there will be some fantastic prizes to be won."

The event isn’t just about the athletes, as there will also be an opportunity to train those who want to achieve their  level 1 training certificate as an official.

And how many thousands did this adventure cost taxpayers? What a waste of money. Glad I aint paying for this winter games. No line on my tax notice to have to give anything to them. Hope lots of people get out and protest this Owe-limp-ikz when it gets here to town. Hopefully NO volunteers offer them anything either. Hope it is a FAILURE.

This is a great opportunity to showcase this sport to the community and also to showcase it to young people who may just take it up.

I can’t wait to see this event. Tabor is a great little mountain with a lot of heart; cheap to ski there and close to home – it doesn’t get better than that.

“hope it’s a failure” ? You must be a riot at parties.

While I don’t believe the city can afford this, it’s a done deal. So, I hope it’s a raging success. Failure would benefit no one.
Looking forward to the benefits it will bring as far as showing PG to the rest of Canada, improving sporting facilities for our “winter city”, and maybe even getting people out of their homes for a few events. Looking forward to taking the kids to watch some events.

As a city, we can’t afford it, but it’s a done deal. There are much worse things your tax dollars are being wasted on!
Get out and participate, watch some events and get some value from those tax dollars.
