Friday, January 18, 2013 @ 7:48 AM
Williams Lake BC- Crews continue to clean up after a tractor trailer carrying hazardous material to a mine in the region left highway 97 and rolled into the ditch.
The driver of the unit was flown to hospital in Vancouver in serious condition.
The accident which occurred just before 6.00pm Thursday, closed highway 97 in both directions because of the hazardous materials being carried. Highway 97 has been re- opened to single lane traffic , and there is a detour in place around the accident scene.
Because of the cargo, anyone living within 400 meters of the accident scene was evacuated.
A hazardous Material team is expected to have the cargo transferred to another unit by about noon today.

Ammonium Nitrate!

Is that what it was for sure Dragon? Curious to know. Why dont they come out and say what it is?

cool thanks

Another truck accident …… wonder what the cause of this one was. We hardly ever get to know it seems. We just know there is a traffic incident.

From that report …. “police suspect weather conditions may have played a role”

In other words, if that proves to be true, driver was not driving according to conditions …. with that type of a cargo ….. wow ….

Ban trucks carrying hazardous materials! It’s not worth the risk! It’s just a matter of time before a truck spills its chemical load into creek!

Ammonium nitrate is not hazardous by itself, it is a commercial fertilizer. When it is mixed with diesel fuel, it becomes ANFO, which is an explosive that they use in mining. This was the same mixture that Timothy McVeigh used in the bombing of the federal building. So either the cargo was not pure AN, or it mixed with spilled fuel.

it said it was “LIKE” ammonium nitrate on the global release. So what is it?

different chemicals….different properties, gr 8 science!

oh, type, not like, same idea.

of course this was not the fault of the heavy hazardous materials vehicle operator. It was the road conditions, right?

This was a professional operator with many hours at the wheel.

Perhaps too many.

So, we do notknow how many. And we do not know what part of those driver skills are actually perishable skills.

We know nothing of the driver. He may have been avoiding an animal, another car, a hitchiker, woke out of a 2 second dream, tweeted …. so many possibilities.

So how many trip miles/km of such materials are made without incident, with close calls, with crashes but no injuries, crashes with injuries and crashes with loss of life.

We have that sort of statistics for airlines. Do we have anything similar with commercial vehicles?

.

Johnybelt then just how do you transport these materials. How would you transport fuel for your vehicle. I could go on and on but get my drift.

JB is poking those against the Enbridge pipeline in the eye with a hot stick seamutt.

Ya I thought of something like that after I posted. Was not his type of comment. Driving and texting, older I get harder to multitask.

Oh, and Gus, this week I saw easily 20 passenger vehicles in the ditch, funny thing is, none of them made the news.
