Burns Lake, B.C. – Today marks the first anniversary of the destruction which claimed two lives, left several co-workers injured and temporarily wiped out the largest single employer in the vicinity of Burns Lake.
At approximately 8:15 on the night of January 20th, 2012, the sawmill at Babine Forest Products 20 kilometres east of Burns Lake was rocked by a massive explosion and subsequent fire which shook the community to the ground. The disaster claimed the lives of Carl Charlie and Robert Luggi Junior, sent 19 other workers to hospitals in Prince George, Vancouver, Victoria and Edmonton and left approximately 250 without jobs for a time.
The solemn event is being marked in Burns Lake today with a remembrance service beginning at 1pm. Mill owner David Hampton and Hampton Affiliates CEO Steve Zika will join the victim’s families, Mayor Luke Strimbold and native elders in attending the service.
