Highway 97 Re-Opens at Hazmat Spill Site

Saturday, January 19, 2013 @ 7:17 AM
Williams Lake, B.C. – Highway 97 is now fully open to traffic north of Williams Lake.

Overnight crews completed transferring ammonium nitrate from one tractor trailer to another, 14 kilometres north of Williams Lake. The first rig had gone off the highway and rolled around 6pm Thursday, forcing the evacuation of about 70 homes and shutting down an elementary school for the day Friday. Highway 97 remained closed to all traffic until late last night, although a detour route was available around the hazardous material spill site.

The driver of the rig that rolled while on its way to a mine site was seriously injured and had to be flown to Vancouver for treatment. There is no update on his condition.
