Prince George, B.C. – Tourism Prince George is launching its new 2013 marketing campaign called “TakeOnPG”.
It incorporates not only local residents but visitors as well. Tourism Prince George CEO Aidan Kelly says “what we’re looking to do is amplify the positive online content about Prince George and allow people to discover new activities and things to do within their own community. We’ve developed a diverse list of 365 activities and those activities are broken down by categories, everything from indoor to outdoor activities, to family fun to food-related, restaurants, to sports, and the list goes on. We’ve curated that into a website, takeonpg.com and you can find everything there.” Kelly says the other part of the campaign is getting a positive message out. “One of the big things we’re doing through the site is we’re taking control of our own story and sharing the positive information on Prince George through the eyes of those who know it best, which is our local residents.” He says it adds an authentic endorsement of the activities and why they like doing them here.
That appears to echo Mayor Shari Green’s sentiment that if we spread a positive message, the city will be seen in a good light instead of as the violent crime capital of Canada. Kelly says the Tourism campaign dovetails with the mayor’s thoughts. “Totally, it’s all in conjunction, it all flows together with the messages that are coming out of City Hall. We’re big believers in that as well. One of my favorite quotes is “a good place to live is a good place to visit”, so when the mayor is working on a number of initiatives to try and boost that positive perception it works on both sides of the coin, with locals and visitors. But we have to take control of our own messaging story so I think all of those initiatives fit really well together.
Kelly says while this is going to be a big focus in the Tourism 2013 campaign, the tools that are being created are going to live on as a resource to help people enjoy the community and discover new things in perpetuity.

Is it ironic that the photo looks like someone is getting mugged or doing a drug deal!
No worries NoWay, Aidan’s moose mascot won’t let her get away.
Great idea Aidan. We’ve let the armchair critics hurl lazy abuse about PG for far too long. Their often poorly informed negative perception and assumptions are largely what drives our image of our city (and outsiders images). We need to ensure there are ways for the rest of us to express the things we are proud of in this city and the reasons we have chosen to live here. Nothing wrong with CONSTRUCTIVE feedback about deficiencies, but I’m SO tired of the slander, name calling, and shallow insults based on nothing of substance.
Aidan’s mother’s name is Lenny ?
LOL, middle finger. Prince George’s image is entirely a case of “if the shoe fits…”
Palopu has made many excellent points about why PG will remain a scuzz-bucket town, until or unless a city council and management team with the humility to think locally takes the reins. Even Trail, a one horse industry town, is far nicer than PG, because it knows its place in the world.
As soon as local politicians stop wasting taxpayer dollars on expensive trips to China, empty supersonic runways, daily flights to Seattle, etc etc. and start pouring those millions into cleaning up roads and infrastructure…then the image of PG may finally improve.
And Lenny…”poorly informed”? Hardly. Most of the negative abuse comes from people who have called PG home for two decades or more, and sent taxes to Patricia, and are sick of seeing the place burn while emperors Kinsley, Rogers and Green fiddle with their IPG and Commonwealth buddies.
Instead of using every excuse to gain matching provincial and fed tax dollars to build white elephants, and then spending more millions on glossy flyers for the world advertising what is ultimately a dirty, pot-holed and crime/corruption/drug filled city…why not actually spend money on cleaning the place up FIRST? IPG and Tourism PG are always cart before the horse.
Yep…enjoy hitting those potholes and driving past filthy boulevards and junkies en route to your candle dipping, snow painting, and watching the taxpayer-subsidized worst team in the Dub ten years and counting in an empty building. Yeee haw!
…….as expected. Hope your perception is working well for you.
I still think (tourism wise) that Prince George is a great town if only just to eat here and get gas.
Surprised Heather Oland is not mentioned or in the photo…wait a minute…I read…IPiG
;)
Hahahahahaha
“Their often poorly informed negative perception and assumptions are largely what drives our image of our city (and outsiders images).”
Lenny the news does it for us. How old was the latest child charged in the child sexual abuse case?
Some of you overthink everything and need to get out more.
Last one standing after this boring debate close the door on the way out.
I am going to go for a walk in Moore`s Meadow and then hit Timmies for a coffee.
Tourism and PG; two words that shouldn’t be together.
Let’s be realistic. We’re a gas stop on the way to or from Alaska.
I would love to see some analysis on the cost of fancy booths/brochures/and tourism concepts/staffing/etc. etc. and how many people actually make PG a tourist destination because of it.
I would guess if there was no Tourism PG, you wouldn’t notice a difference.
Bang on, JB
“We’re a gas stop on the way to or from Alaska”
I heard someone on a Seattle comedy show last night refer to the central part of the state as a pee stop ….. :-)
The similarity is interesting. They even referred to people from that part of the state as upset at the greater Seattle area being fed money to support their various infrastructure needs.
I wish they would give us a property inventory of what facilities are available beyond pee stops around the region. I know there are some, but I really have no idea of the number, the variety, the location, the seasonality, occupancy capacity and occupancy rate. Then relate that to the profile of current visitors passing through. What age groups are they and what are they looking for along the way or as a destination or part of the destination.
I suspect the information is there. If so, then is there an opportunity and if there is, what have we been doing about it and what have been the results?
How has the Golden Raven Program been doing? There should be data coming out of that. Can we have some of that passed on to us or is it a big secret?

If you have not already done so, you can vote for your likes or dislikes of the 365 activities starting from that page.
Click on a categgory, then an activity in that category, then on a star from 1 to 5. Thing is, one has to vote for at least one star, otherwise your will not be known.
I am still wondering what feeling a tarantula has to to do with arts and culture. No wonder we do not need a PAC when people in tourism do not know what art and culture is. I mean, if we were in a region in which tarantulas were indiginous, I could see the stretch towards culture …. or maybe if we could dip a bunch of tarantulas in different coloured pigments and get them to crawl along a piece of wood to deposit it in semi random patterns, maybe we would be onto something towards the art category.
There is this saying about not knowing that one does not know …. we might have a bad case of that locally by some who do the job they do because they should know.
This dump will never be a destination for anything but an unpleasant stop on your way to anywhere else. Sad but true.
@NoWay , you`ve been to too many muggings and drug deals….time to turn your self in.
What a bad idea, and a waste of money.
If PG wants to market itself as a tourism destination, maybe it should try and compile a list of things it offers which you could not do anything else, things unique to the area.
The #2 thing to do is see a giant tree? Really?
I’d like to add a few, feel free to put your own on the list.
#366, “Support the Prince George economy! Buy new ball joints, struts and shocks after hitting a few hundred potholes at posted speed limits!”
#367, “Ever wondered what it’s like to have cancer? Our airshed will have your lungs hurting and your eyes red in no time!”
#368, “Planning a visit? Stay at the Connaught Motor Inn! Meet locals, share tips on freebasing heroin! See how good your car alarm really is! Bed bug free for 2 days!”
#369, “In a hurry? So is everyone else! Watch for the flashing signs showing you’re speeding! See if you can catch a rare glimpse of one of them not flashing!”
#370, “Mayor Shari Green loves taxpayer dollars! Why not buy some property! More taxes means more lavish spending for council!”
#371, “Thanks for the memories! Try one of our many ATMs downtown! Our aggressive bums and drunks will have you looking over your shoulder and trying to remember faces you see!”
#372, “Go full patch! Prince George is a friendly host to the Hells Angels!”
To all those negative armchair critics,
if this town is so bad to live in, why are you still here. Who or What is keeping you? I would be very happy to wave good by.
The rest of us, enjoyed the “takeonPG” event held at Exploration Place. There was such a great turn out that parking spaces were hard to come by even along 20th Ave.
What a wonderful family oriented gathering. Adults and kids were able to enjoy outdoor winter activities free of charge. Go PG !
Thanks to all the staff and volunteers from Tourism PG and Exploration Place who gave up their weekend for the people of PG.
To turn a phrase, “PG is a nice place to live but I wouldn’t want to visit here”. How’s zat?
