Prince George, B.C. – If you want to know why the Prince George Spruce Kings trail the Chilliwack Chiefs by nine points in the BCHL’s Mainland Division, look no further than the five times the teams have met this season.

The Chiefs knocked off the Spruce Kings 4-2 Saturday night, making that the last five games straight the Chiefs have beaten the Spruce Kings. One of those five was an overtime decision.

Saturday’s game at the Coliseum saw Chilliwack take a 2-1 first period lead on two goals by Philip Zielonka sandwiched around Chad Staley’s marker for the Spruce Kings.   The Chiefs upped that to 3-1 with the lone goal of the second period scored by Josh Hansen at 16:07.   In the third, it happened again for the second straight night. The Spruce Kings scored late in the period, this time Mark Begert scoring on the power play at 15:04, to make it close at 3-2. And again they pulled Kirk Thompson, this time with 1:35 left and again the Chiefs got an empty netter, Luke Esposito at 19:33, to win the contest 4-2.

The Spruce Kings outshot Chilliwack 32-29, but again were stymied by the solid goaltending of Mitch Gillam.      The two clubs will meet for a sixth time this season, this Wednesday in Chilliwack, as the Spruce Kings try to solve the jinx of the Chiefs.

West Kelowna beat Surrey 5-3 Saturday night so the Chiefs victory moves them one point ahead of the Eagles atop the Mainland Division with 54 points. The Spruce Kings remain in third place with 45 points.
