Mayor To Set Up Crime Task Force
Monday, January 21, 2013 @ 4:30 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The Mayor of Prince George, Shari Green, will be calling on her Council colleages this evening, to approve setting up a select committee to be known as “The Mayor’s Task Force on Crime”.
The move follows Prince George being named the Crime Capital of Canada by McLeans magazine three years running.
The draft guidelines for the committee note four objectives:
1. Reduce crime and increase community safety
2. Increase public involvement in reducing crime
3. Increase integration between all stakeholders involved in crime reduction and
4. Improve public awareness around the reality and perception of crime
The Mayor suggests the Committee examine closely the City of Surrey’s crime reduction strategy. The Mayor envisions a Crime Reduction Strategy that will:
a) prevent and deter targeted priority crimes;
b) detect crime and apprehend/prosecute offenders;
c) rehabilitate and integrate offenders as productive members of society and;
d) address the fear of crime and promote feelings of safety.
The Mayor, and two members of Council will be on the Committee which hopes to bring together a variety of stakeholders.

Sounds like another useless committee.
How about a real police commission instead of this namby pamby group?
fix the justice system first then you can control crime
Do we have a municipal police board? How about a police committee?
Fix the social system first.
How many do we need? Thought we already had one.
Sounds like a recipe for stepping on toes and pissing people off who are already in charge of these things. Focus on your core responsibilities first, you’re having enough trouble with that already.
Gus is right: fix the social system and you will go a long way towards preventing crime and creating healthier community. Figure out who’s committing the crimes, target that demographic for attention to needs and services, decrease their alienation while increasing their sense of connection to the community, and create a broader sense of “buying in”. Those who feel a sense of belonging have less of a tendency to act destructively against those to whom they feel they belong.
Start by properly funding non-profit agencies, such as the John Howard Society, that serve the needs of those who are in “the system” as well other disenfranchised men.
I won’t mention race-based sentencing if you don’t.
For only $4.2mill we could have picked up the original Batmobile on the weekend and then combined forces with the Shari Green hornet….problem solved commissioner Gordon:)

Does Idle No More mean they are going to be sending out resumes?
I thought we already had this!
It’s called abiding by the law…
The Mayor is on track with this one. Regardless of what we had in the past it did not work.
If you want to wait 100 years while you fix the social system, then have fun. The fact of the matter is.
Crimes are committed by criminals. We already have most of these criminals in a data base, and we know who they are, where they come from, which types of crimes they have committed, and when they were committed, and the time served when found guilty.
Contrary to popular opinion we do not have hundreds of new criminals coming on line every day. In a small city like Pr George, it doesnt take a genius to figure out whats happening here.
1.We need to target repeat offenders and if necessary give them longer terms in jail.
2. We need to look at where criminals are serving their time, and where they are being released back into society. In other words, are we (because of the local
prison) receiving and keeping all those who are released from jail in Prince George?? Is it cheaper to release them here than to return them to where they came from.??
4. We have a number of people who finish their sentences in rehap facilities, such as Activators, John Howard Society, St. Patricks, and I suspect Baldy Hughes, are these people also staying in Prince George when released.
5. Are we becoming a melting pot for criminals for the whole Central Interior, and if so what can we do about it.
6. Are we getting the best utilization out of our Police Forces. We have the new police force located at 22nd Avenue that apparently was set up to fight drugs and organized crime. So one can assume that we have a drug and organized crime problem.
In addition we have the Regional Police, and the City Police. Are we spending to much time on traffic fines, and administration and not enough on criminals. I suspect so.
7. There is nothing in the future to indicate that this problem will get any better unless we take some affirmative action, like they did in Surrey, and Williams Lake. If we dont, then we are in for some bad years, and crime will only increase.
8. The Provincial Government has a huge responsibility in this area, through the Justice System, and through policing and sentencing, and its time they stepped up to the plate.
9. The Mayor (as Chief Magistrate) and Council through the Police liason Manager, have always had a responsiblility to see that the Police give us the best bang for our dollars when it comes to policing. The problem is over the past 10/20 years is that they never took this responsibility seriously and basically let the Police do whatever they chose to do.
10. Hopefully this task force will allow them to focus on specific criminal activity, and get some reductions.
At the same time we can be working on the social system, and the rehabilitation of these people. It is not necessary that we fix one before we tackle the other.
If ever there was an issue that needed support from the citizens of this City, this is the one.
Well said, Palopu!
does anyone know exactly what type of police work is done by those at the secretive location by alfredos pub? cold cases?
The fact that two South African nationals are still in this country shows how broken our court system is.
I thought we already had a 128 crime figthers costing the biggest portion of the budget.
Cheers
Just another stunt to take our minds off the usual spring pot hole season. How about a task force about pot holes?
Let Social workers run it, they’ll fix everything in no time……
“Idle No More” is simply a reactionary movement to the “no Idle” sign proliferation. :-)
“Crimes are committed by criminals” …
paintings are painted by painters …..
poems are written by poets
duh!!!
;-)
Oh ….
there is one I forgot …
policing is done by police ….. they have the authority …..
Interestingly, Council has more authority and say in fixing the social system in the case of having a contracvted police force which is also the provincial police force.
Communities which have their own police force over which they have jurisdiction do have Police Boards and Police Committees which have authority over the police force.
Here is Abbotsford’s web page on their Police Board along with meeting schedule and minutes of past meetings.
They set direction and monitor the effectiveness of the force.
How do we do that in PG?
http://www.abbypd.ca/Abbotsford-Police-Board
From that page â¦..
Mission – To provide independent civilian oversight and governance of the Abbotsford Police Department to ENSURE MEASURABLE PROGRESS towards a safer community.
Responsibilities of the Police Board â INCLUDES policy and direction setters
Rehabilation;so 70s EH!there ain,t no such a thing as “REHABILATION“`,That is what is so funny!still ROTFLMAO…
It is an individual thing as too weather you want to do the revolving door or do your time and say enuff !!

Item 7. STATISTICAL DATA â PERIOD 4
DCC Lucy reviewed the CompStat report for period 4 noting the following:
Highlights/Lowlights:
ïï Good period overall
ïï Not a good period from a traffic perspective with two fatal collisions
ïï Criminal code offences down by over 400 YTD
ïï Crime against property down 17% YTD, lowest in previous 14 periods
ïï Robberies were better period than previous period by 50%; no business or
financial robberies in the period
ïï Sex offences â 3 in the period, which is down from 8 in the previous period
ïï Residential B&E down YTD by 32%
ïï Theft of motor vehicles â 9 in this period, which is the first time a single digit entry
has been reported in this category since CompStat reporting began; the target
is to have less than one a day so this is well below the target
It is a snapshot and may be a good one in midst of a whole batch of poor one â¦.. but could this be one from PG?
talking about 70ish …
this is so 21st centurish …
– address the fear of crime and promote feelings of safety.
We could move the CEO of PG Tourism over to this portfolio to do this …. 366 ways to promote safety …. other than making things safer …. ;-)
First organization this task Force should tackle is The City. It’s a crime what they are doing to the already overtaxed residents of PG.
I love this idea that all the woes this town has are simply a matter of perception. Maybe if we all think positive summer will arrive next week.
Maybe the mayor should set up a “why aren’t our judges doing their job properly task force”
How many times do we hear “Known to Police” Just what does this mean exactly? Are we just waiting for them to re-offend? The lawyers make sure we can’t be proactive against these people.
Your right Al Coholic. The cops know the people who hold the higher up positions within the drug trade. They arrest them and an hour later their lawyer has them out.So what does Shari Green think she is going to accomplish by trying to get all tough with the situation?Absolutely nothing!I’m sure all the criminals started sh#$%^* their pants after she made this announcement.I had a good laugh about it!Maybe Mayor Green can grease the palms of some judges to get things straightened out!
Crimes are committed by criminals. Thats the point. If they commit the crime they should do the time, however that does not appear to be the case.
In fact if they commit the crime quite often they dont do the time. Thats where the problem lies.
We all know (or should know) that the Police, Justice System, Provincial Government, etc; etc; etc; are all avoiding long term prison sentences for criminals because of the huge cost attached.
So rather that have these people in prison, we end up putting them through half way houses, rehab centres, and any other way we can handle them to reduce the cost of having them in prison. This helps the Government reduce costs, however it increases the costs to the Police and taxpayers who have to make up the difference.
In my opinion we are working with a failed system, and perhaps the Mayor and this committee, can solve some of the problems at the local level. If we can do it here, maybe it will spread around the Province.
In fact I think it is time that we try and solve all problems in Prince George ie; high taxes, overpaid and underworked civil servants, police and fire protection, road rehab, garbage disposal, snow removal, high consumer costs, etc; etc;. We could be leaders in getting the City operating the way it should rather than sitting on our asses and copying how they do it in other areas.
Lets become a leading City in all areas in the Province, instead of being leaders in those areas that are detrimental to us.
Right now we are leaders in Hype, Hyperbole, and BS, and not much more.
Mayor Green needs to clean up her act first before sitting on a board such as this. She deeds to display some integrity towards laws rather than just bending them. She is the poorest example of our city with her lack of respect for laws. Agree with the concept but wrong leader.
You are all looking in the wrong direction.
It is our community that is causing the problems, not the police.
What the heck are you ragging on the police or our politicians fore? Are they the perpatrators?
Take off your blinders and look at the real issues that causes people like you and me to commit crimes!
Ron J Davis
“Known to Police”
What does it mean when you make the observation “known to me”?
A similar spectrum of knoweldge exists, from people who have been to jail, to those who have never been in jail because there is not enough evidence, but may be associated with some who have been arrested but not convicted to those who have been convicted.
For instance, I suppose it may be a family member of a convict or suspected convict who, other than that has never been involved directly.
So, I am wondering whether a business owner of a business which has had 3 burglaries in the last year at a new location is also “known” to police. I am hoping that the individual is, even though the individual is a victim of crime rather than a perpetrator of crime.
I have not seen anyone delve into the fact that western cities have higher crime rates than Central Canada and Maritime provinces tend to have the lowest crime rates.
There seems to be something else going on. Possibly even something that people find politically incorrect to talk about.
Crime rate map for Canada based on 2007 data.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Crime_Rate_in_Canada.svg
The distribution of high in the north and lower in the south as well as high in the West, highest in the Prairies, lower in Central and lowest in the Maritimes still holds for today.
I think we are fighting the laws of demographics as well as social make-ups and mindsets of the regions.
does this mean she is going to flip flop on her decision to cut the budget for community policing? She got rid of a couple of positions last year during the service cuts and those were the very same people that were actually on the ground trying to make things better.
It is strange that she now wants to be tough on crime and proactive in reducing crime when just last year she was cutting the budget for community policing and saying no to the request for more officers.
ummm.. am I wrong about this but doesnt
RCMP = Crime Task Force ?
Community Policing should be looked after by the Fire Department and the present voluteers. It need not be done by paid City or Police Officers.
The Fire Department has the time to go to the Schools etc and give a speech on community policing etc; they do it now in regards to fire safety. In addition they can also run all the other programs that are presently looked after by community policing.
We all know (or should know) that the Police, Justice System, Provincial Government, etc; etc; etc; are all avoiding long term prison sentences for criminals because of the huge cost attached.
And that my friends is the truth! The Liberals are balancing their budget at our expense and the insurance companies, therefore you end up with RE peat offenders.
Man the RCMP must just shake their heads.
You want criminals and mentals running around on the street just vote Liberal this coming May.
Paul: “You want criminals and mentals running around on the street just vote Liberal this coming May.”
You say this as if the NDP is going to be any different.
A compost pile is meant to promote rot and decay, you pile your refuse in one location or spot and leave it, it starts to rot. Common sense will tell you that over time weeds will start to grow if you don’t keep an eye on the pile.
Welcome to Prince George’s down town core (compost pile). The city has granted all sorts of licenses for outreach services in the same area (or spot). They have not maintained the pile so now we are up to our butts in weeds.
The only way to really clean up the issue is to dig this area up and spread out the compost. Put a majority of these services on notice that they need to relocate within a transit service zone. Break the city into quadrants and no more than one social service per quadrant. You need to spread these services out so that the element of concern isn’t concentrated in one area like it is now. Don’t for a second try to tell me that the ones who are the issues don’t hang around these areas, they do.
This is a city planning issue that has been ignored for far too long, and it needs to be addressed now. You can talk crime reduction till the cows come home, until you actually become proactive this will always be an issue. Land values, property values, property development, urban development and population outlook all are effected by crime in a specific area.
You can’t grow your city until you clean up the mess down town. Crappy buildings owned by absentee landlords, tenants who try to keep there businesses clean and presentable are faced with vandalism, break and enters, dumpster divers and the ever popular doorway slouches pan handling.
Seriously for all the hot air that comes out of city counsel, someone needs to step up and make a change, make a change not debate it till you’re tired of it then slap a Band-Aid on it.
“You want criminals and mentals running around on the street just vote Liberal this coming May”.
All the criminals and mentals can’t all fit into the Legislature at the same time.
This is the Harper plan and its sifted down top the municipalities. Bigger jails and bigger punishment is the solution. And thatâs how many see it.
Itâs a social problem and it starts with our families and our youth. Families are not having enough time together. Ma goes to work and Pa goes to work and the kids are left to their own devices. Canada is #2 when it comes to child poverty and that a great recipe for where crime is bred.
Our youth needs guidance and an education is the place to start. At home and at school. Then we have the right wing idea that social programs, schooling and health are places that funding needs to be cut to drive the economy and provide jobs but they forget that our youth needs training to fill those jobs.
Right now the politicians are providing all this training but only at election time and then we are back to cut, cut and more cuts. Education is a life long experience and not a short tem solution. And as long as we have this mind set crime will always be with us.
And then there is the “Idle No More Problem” that we have not been able to solve in over 100 years. The only education provided for this segment of our society appears to be lawyers and to hell with the rest.
Cheers
When the perp gets arrested and the judge sentences them to “one day in jail and eighteen months probation”, don’t feed them on that one day in jail. Might be a lesson for them.
If our criminals were`nt so dumb, we wouldn`t be so high up on the list….We have a clown college up on the hill ,how come we get the dumbest criminals???
Mayor Green reminds me of the boss girl on Workaholics tv show. I laugh all the time because of it… a lot of parallels there.
Palapu, you think community policing should be looked after by the Fire Department and volunteers? Do you realize how many hats, professions and careers they already have to be responsible for?
Firefighting, Trained First Responders for all medical emergencies. Vehicle extrication! Hazardous Material training!(Chemicals) Railway (Tank car) and Airport Emergency training! River Rescue! High Angle Rapeling and rescue! Manhole Rescue! Natural Gas Training! Hydro and Electrical Training! Surface Mine Rescue! Inspections! School Lectures and community PR work. You really have no idea of the responsibilities a Firefighter has and the training required to do their job. Adding yet one more responsibility is asinine.
How would I know? I spent 18 years of my life committed to that job.
Wow, servant! That amount of training sounds more or less like a pile of pointless “busy-work” to me. Your use of exclamation points does not help your cause.

==================================================================
And what do these fire fighters do for the rest of the year after training? To add policing wuld make their training complete. Great idea.
“That amount of training sounds more or less like a pile of pointless “busy-work” to me.”
Yup pointless until your neighbor digs up a gas line or your boat breaks down on the Nechako or a power line falls across your driveway… then you will be begging for help ;)
I am not a fireman but I am friends with several and they literally commit thier lives to it. If they took the hours of training and just went to a minimum wage job they would make more money than alot of people do…
