Fairview Terminal Expansion Clears Environmental Assessment

Saturday, January 26, 2013 @ 4:47 AM
Prince Rupert, B.C. – The  Fairview Terminal Expansion project phase II has cleared another hurdle as the Federal Ministry of the Environment has determined the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. That clearance hinges on the implementation of mitigation measures  detailed in the Comprehensive Study Report.

The expansion, as proposed by the Prince Rupert Port Authority and CN will include extending the existing wharf structure and expanding the onshore terminal. As part of the project, CN Rail is proposing to construct two rail sidings, a maintenance road and a wye (a triangular shaped arrangement of railway tracks with a switch point at each corner).

The expansion will allow the terminal to quadruple it’s capacity from it current capacity of 500,000 TEUs per year (twenty foot equivalent) to 2,000,000 TEUs per year .

The proposal has now been referred back to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment Canada and the Canadian Transportation Agency for appropriate action.

Very good news for Northern BC

This is encouraging news. I think of all the shipping that goes on in the Vancouver Harbour every single day. Don’t hear a lot about environmental disasters there.

Phase (1) should be completed sometime in 2017/18 if it gets the other approvals. Phase (2) if ever built would not be started until 2017/18 and finished 5/10 years later, so lets say 2025. So dont hold your breath for any big changes.

Palopu. Phase 1 is complete, they’ve been moving containers in and out for several years (I can send a pic if needed). Perhaps you are referring to phases 2 and 3? I know CN has invested significant money upgrading the rail line already. The people of the area look forward to phase 2 getting underway in the near future.

Phase 1 was the original Fairview Container Terminal for 500,000 TEU’s and has been completed for a number of years.

The new expansion is the Fairview Terminal Expansion and is being referred to as Phase 1, and Phase 2. There is no mention of a phase three.

You can get all the information you need from the Comprehensive Study Report.
