Public Comment Wanted on Sukunka Coal Mine Project

Monday, January 28, 2013 @ 3:55 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Xstrata Coal Canada has filed it’s project description for its proposed Sukunka coal mine project and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is calling for public comment to decide if their needs to be a federal environmental assessment of this project.

The proposed mine would be about 55 kilometres south of Chetwynd and 40 kilometres west of Tumbler Ridge.  The  project outline can be viewed here.

The project would see the development of an open pit and underground coalmine that would eventually produce 6 million tones of washed coal   each year. The mine is expected to have a life of at least 20 years.

The coal would be transported by rail to a port in Prince Rupert for shipment to overseas markets.
