Beware of Oversized Rodents

Saturday, February 2, 2013 @ 3:56 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Happy Groundhog Day! The celebration each February 2nd, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore.

According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early. If it’s sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

Modern customs followed each February 2nd include early morning festivals to watch the groundhog emerging from its burrow. People eat food, listen to speeches and wait to see the oversized rodent. We are not certain that imbibing of any type is included.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

The forecast this Groundhog Day in Prince George is for mainly cloudy skies and a high of plus 3.  If you can find a groundhog, check it out and get back to us on weather spring is just around the corner, of if we haven’t yet seen our annual winter deep freeze.

funny … the picture above is infact Richardsons ground squirrels .. not Groundhogs ;)

There is a groundhog burrowed in by my house in South Fort George. I can assure you he never showed his face today and I therefore surmise he did not see his shadow. We will be having an early spring.
