Clippers Nip Spruce Kings at Coliseum

Friday, February 1, 2013 @ 9:51 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The Nanaimo Clippers scored twice in the third period to edge the Prince George Spruce Kings 2-1 at the Coliseum Friday night.

The story of the game through two periods was Spruce Kings’ goalie Kirk Thompson, who was coming off a 4-1 victory over Surrey Thursday night. Thompson, who on Friday committed to a scholarship with AIC, an NCAA Division 1 team in Springfield, Massachusetts, looked much hotter than his teammates in stopping all 19 shots fired his way through 40 minutes. In fact his club held a 1-0 lead through two periods on a first period marker from Cameron Lawson, his team-leading 16th of the season.

However the Clippers kept coming and it paid off with a power play goal from Josh Bryan at 4:26 of the third, and the winner off the stick of Mason Mitchell at the 10:22 mark. The Spruce Kings pulled Thompson with a little over a minute to go but couldn’t find the net to square things up.

Nanaimo went 1 for 6 on the power play while the Spruce Kings were 0 for 4. The Clippers outshot Prince George 31-25. The Clippers took both games of the season against the Spruce Kings.

The one positive note for the home team is that Chilliwack lost as well Friday night so the Spruce Kings remain in third place in the Mainland Division, still 6 points behind the Chiefs. The Clippers are second in the Island Division.

The Spruce Kings are off now until next weekend when they head to the coast to play Surrey Friday night and Chilliwack on Saturday. Their next home game is Valentine’s Day against Langley.
