BC Gov’t Gets In On Questioning At Northern Gateway Hearings
Prince George, BC – The provincial government says its legal counsel will focus on oil spill prevention and response capabilities as part of the cross-examination of Enbridge/Northern Gateway respresentatives, as the Joint Review Panel hearings resume in Prince Rupert today.
"Our government is committed to defending British Columbians’ interests, which is why I will be attending initial testimony in Prince Rupert," says BC Environment Minister, Terry Lake. "While marine spill response is primarily a federal issue, it is important that our government ensure British Columbians are protected from financial and environmental risk."
The ministry says lawyers for the Province will follow up on the last round of questioning regard land-based spill response asked in Prince George this past October. "Among the list of topics the Province is looking to get more detail on are spill response standards and availability of response resources, as well as how the challenges of northern BC’s geography and climate could impact a spill response.
This week’s hearings run from today until Friday, from 8:30am until 4:30pm. To listen to the webcast, click here.

This is of course contingent on actually believing what enbridge tells them about thier ability and conviction to handle any type of spill.
Bwahaha! This provincial gov’t is so late to the game…again…only because oppposing FNs will have this pipedream locked up in court, due to the lack of consultation, which will infringe their rights and title…now remember, those rights and title are written in the constitution, section 35, for those of you that need to be “reminded”…
FNs are as entrepreneurial as anyone, lots of examples in this province, google it…
But, because Enbridge chose to know what is best for their version of “FN partnerships”, the after the fact business structure, with only a 10% maximum cap, for all the FNs, which, whose territory this pipedream crosses, it simply won’t get approved…Enbridge should have had FNs at the bargaining table right from the start of the concept to how the business entities would look, before any NEB JRP hearings started, but, nope, Enbridge let their ignorant, arrogant colonial thinking get in the way of real progress, in having FNs in BC, as true partners, maybe, just maybe, this project might have been better off…the shoulda, coulda, wouldas is all that will be there, for the history of this pipedream because this project will be locked up in the courts for years to come, yet another one for the lawyers to benefit, no one else…
So, before anyone spews rhetoric about FNs waste tax dollars yadda yadda…know this folks, the lands and resources and its revenues are “held in trust” by the federal and provincial gov’ts, revenue generated by corporations, not the tax payers, big difference…which is unilaterally written in colonial laws by the federal and provincial gov’ts, like the “Indian Act”, which were not written by FNs…
Silver: “So, before anyone spews rhetoric about FNs waste tax dollars yadda yadda”
Chief Spence yadda yadda’ed $100M of taxpayer money, while her band lived in poverty.
haha good ole johnny boy,
check out page 8 of the executive summary and again on page 14 of that so-called “audit”…that was done by none other than the federal government’s “auditor” deloitte…the recommendations speak volumes about the federal government’s ministry, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada(AANDC)…
Don’t be so naive, to think that because Deloitte is this squeeky clean accounting firm, that what they say about Teresa Spence is godspeak, come on buddy…
It ain’t in Deloitte’s interest to make the AANDC look bad, they are the puppet, with the strings being pulled by the federal Conservative gov’t…and yet, the AANDC was in many ways the 3rd party manager of that community for 10 years, with Chief Spence at the helm since only 2010…
google deloitte and shady accounting practices and you’ll see what comes up…a few stories of that firm’s checkered past…
johnnybelt,
and to re-iterate, it ain’t taxpayer’s money, which folks seem to think because it’s easiest to complain than get educated on…it’s natural resource corporation tax generated revenue that fund AANDC, not money form your property taxes or taxes you pay from your work pay…huge difference…which, those natural resource tax revenues are held “in trust by gov’t on behalf of FNs”…because the lands and the resources are FN’s territory…
Where did the 300 million go from the diamond mine?
Lots of rich lawyers, white and native and getting richer, but hey its all about the people living in shacks.
hello seamutt…wondering when you would comment…
to answer your question of 300 million from the diamond mine, i’d point the finger at the huge bureaucracy of the AANDC, which is worth an estimated 8 to 12 billion dollars, just that one federal ministry alone…some of you folks need to understand that the federal gov’t ministry, that is AANDC enables the status quo about FNs, that folks complain about…the amount of accountants, lawyers and consultants that use the AANDC is staggering, to say the least…AANDC is guilty, at maintaining/enabling the bigotry in this country…
seamutt, you may not like that answer, but there are way more questions about that so-called “audit” than answers, you or I, will ever get…AANDC is the first place to look, follow the money…AANDC were the 3rd party managers of that community for 10 years…
The BC government has to send lawyers to these hearings to get answers? How absurd.
It’s actually worse than absurd…it’s another waste of tax dollars.
silver: “Don’t be so naive, to think that because Deloitte is this squeeky clean accounting firm, that what they say about Teresa Spence is godspeak, come on buddy…”
So, I’m supposed to believe you… is that what you’re saying?
I have to say that it takes great chutzpah to defend Chief Spence in light of all that we know, and explain away $400M missing dollars in a few sentences the way you have, while taking a general shot at an accounting firm in the process.
I noticed that The “idle no more” protest has ground to a halt after facts and figures were applied to Spence (I won’t call her by the title “Chief” because she has done nothing to deserve it). We get it. Indians were treated badly and everyone needs to work together in order to make this country a better place to live. Fair enough. Stamping your little foot to DEMAND change lends the protest a whiff of entitlement that is sure to turn off the everyday Canadian voter. The protestors act like the little sister that wanted the corner piece of the cake when it wasn’t even her own birthday party. OWS lasted for a few months and unless this movement can harness some real goals I fear it will fade away just like it.
The pipeline will not end up in the courts for years, because the oil will move to the US via the Keystone Pipeline, and East on an expanded Trans Canada Pipeline, and South to Vancouver by expanding the present lines.
If there is anything left over, it will move via rail to various destinations, however NOT Prince Rupert, or Kitimat.
Will this be an opportunity lost?? Who knows?? Personally I dont give a S..t what they do with this oil. They can leave it in the round for all I care. However I am not so naive to think that those who want to move this oil will be stopped by anyone in BC, they will just go another way.
As for the Liberals, and Terry Lake, they are just posturing before the next election. If these guys win the next election they will sell us out in a New York minute, to big oil, and give us some sort of BS story like they did with the HST.
Terry Lake was a big HST supporter, and was considered as a good target for a recall at one time. Hopefully he will get his marching papers in the next election.
Palopu: “If there is anything left over, it will move via rail to various destinations, however NOT Prince Rupert, or Kitimat.”
You say that as if you have inside info. Do you? Or are you just talking out of your *ss?
“Terry Lake was a big HST supporter, and was considered as a good target for a recall at one time. Hopefully he will get his marching papers in the next election.”
Your position as the board curmudgeon is solidifed with such comments. Aren’t you always reminding everyone that the HST referendum is over?
Time to start a new one over the carbon tax. ;-)
JohnnyBelt.
The reason I say it will not go to Prince Rupert or Kitimat via rail, is because if there is no pipeline then there will be no need for the ships to go to either Kitimat or Pr Rupert. I doubt that the volume that could be railed would be enough to warrant ships going there. In addition you would still have issues with the enviormental and first nations in regards to oil spills etc; This issue is about pipelines, and oil tankers.
There is also a cost attached to railing this bitumen. It cant easily be pumped from rail cars, and would probably need to be connected to steam hoses to facilitate unloading. Or it would have to be reduced to a 50/50 mix when shipped, which would reduce the amount of actual oil you could put into a rail car.
The referendum is over, and most of the running dogs in Government who supported it either in public, or hiding behind closed doors are gone, however there are still some hanging on. Terry Lake, along with Bell, and Bond to mention a few. If these people insist on running again then hopefully they will get their just deserts.
johnnybelt,
have a read of the so-called “audit” by the shady company deloitte…
http://www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca/eng/1350243697995/1350243941069
the conclusion and recommendations in the executive summary, on page 6, for the AANDC are really extensive, basically states that they(AANDC) too, were not doing their jobs. This is a ministry mired in mismanagement. It goes to show that the “independent” company, deloitte, plays the fiddle for the federal gov’t. If they don’t, bye bye federal contracts for deloitte. I said it before, the AANDC is maintaining/enabling the ignorant, racist attitudes of many in this country, you apparently, fall in that, hook, line and sinker…so does usedta…types like yourselves take the easy route, by being ignorant…take the time to educate yourselves on FN issues…
usedta,
Idle No More is different than any other movement, in that, it is calling upon many non-FNs to be allies, to stop this Harper dictatorship and his feeble attempts at doing what he wants…sure, it has had a couple days of physical blockades, they are peaceful in approach, not confrontational…the rcmp and companies like CN Rail, have been cooperative…Idle No More will be around for quite awhile…usedta, this movement wants inclusion in decision making when it comes to natural resource development and a say in how to maintain the environment, a tricky proposition, but, in can be done, it’s a realistic goal…all the more any politician or voter, now or future ones, need to educate themselves of the FN issues in this country…it is time for folks like you, to lose the colonial way of thinking of what is best for FNs…
Idle No More is nothing more than a bunch of idiots chasing their own tails. They want what they’re not quite sure about but they want it NOW.
Sileverback
Its common knowledge that the Indian affairs and its administration have been useless for years. However it dosen’t take a mental giant or Deloittes to see that Spence grossly mismanaged that reserve. FN’s are always looking to blame everyone but themselves. Either its the governments fault or Deloittes or resedential schools or whatever. This is why the idle no more will pass like a fart in the wind. Gutting indian affairs and band accountability will be needed to move this forward.
usedta usedta usedta(sigh)…
with a reply from you like that, i stand corrected what i said about you…another ignorant person who won’t take the time to educate yourself on FN issues…
The same can be said about, you, dow7500, with a comment like yours dow7500, taking the easy route by being ignorant bigots, that’s your problem to be that way, carry that negativity around all you want…i hope you, dow7500 and usedta and others for that matter, don’t have kids or nephews and nieces to pass on your distain, that would be most unfortunate…
Yo johnnybelt, seamutt, usedta and dow7500,
here’s an article that may open your eyes to the huge bureaucracy that is the AANDC, the most mismanaged ministry within the federal government…
