A Meaty Mainstay Is Closed
The lights are off in Mr. Jake’s on Third Avenue
Prince George, BC – After close to 50-years of serving up hearty helpings to city residents craving a juicy steak, the grill is idle at Mr. Jake’s Steakhouse on Third Avenue.
A sign on the door thanks customers for "their loyalty over the last 47 years (WOW)" and says the restaurant will be temporarily closed for renovations.
While calls to local owner/operator have not been returned, the landlord says for the restaurant’s future remains very much up in the air, at this point.
"I wish I could tell you exact details on the renovations, but it’s very much a work in progress," says Chris Tsakumis, Vice-President of 7 Holdings Inc.. "We’re in ongoing discussions with the local family and we’re hopeful they’ll continue on, but there are some members who don’t want to run it anymore."
Tsakumis says his company owns and operates the Mr. Jake’s restaurant chain, but the Prince George restaurant has remained locally owned. He says there is the possibility of bringing in a new management team should the local family step out. As far as renovations go, Tsakumis says everything is being looked at: from a cosmetic overhaul to re-building altogether. Tsakumis says it’s just too soon to say when steaks will once again be charbroiling on the grill.

Hopefully they will re open. Always enjoy going there to eat.
Oh man, where am I going to get potato salad when I visit PG now? Their potato salad is unrivalled IMHO. They should sell that stuff in supermarkets. Dragon’s Den anyone?
That’s too bad. Not many joints a person can go to for a good meal without getting hosed. First the Cariboo and now Jakes? What’s left downtown?
On a side note, I hear cows and chickens are holding a celebratory square dance this weekend.
Always an excellent meal for a decent price and great staff! Going to miss them, hope they re-open.
The Citizen had a full page report over the weekend clearly stating that the place was being renovated with no mention of closing at all.
Was the best under the Tsembeles’. RIP Alex.
Been eating there for 42 years. The best place in PG with out getting ripped off. Please reopen.
yes please please DO NOT close!
I loved their potato salad. and certainly a great value for their steak dinner. Hope they open again in the future.
By the time they re-open the HST will be EXTINGUISHED. That will certainly bring in more customers. I have not been there since June 2010. I do miss the place too. I wonder why the PG citizen does not have the thing on their front page saying how many days till the HST is EXTINGUISHED. They sure enjoyed rubbing our faces in it every day for the three months leading up to the big lie being imposed on us. So I do it for us. 53 DAYS TO GO TILL THE HST IS EXINGUISHED.
mattyc, you need some help. It’s a little weird to be so fixated on one issue. Let it go man!
I sure hope Jake’s re-opens. It is my partner’s favourite “quick” spot to eat.
Plyot Project, have you tried Nancy O’s or Hummus Bros.? Their prices aren’t too bad.
Probably closed because their prices were too low to make a profit & if they raised them they would lose their cheap-ass clientel. Profit margins for restaurants are ridiculously low which is why so few survive.

I agree – wow. If you turly enjoy eating there then GO – Last time I was there I believe a classic “number 8” steak was $11.95. The GST was there anyway so you are avoiding the place over 84 cents? Yet you will drive to Alberta to shop? This makes sense to you how?
The HST wasn’t the armageddon the restaurant industry (and the HST alarmists) predicted it would be.
you got that right JB – but Vanderzalm rallied the troops and now we will all enjoy price increases as everyone pays extra staff to go back to the old inefficient system…
LEave it to BC to dump the tax regiment that the rest of the provinces either want or already have. Back to the stone age.
Guys, guys… 55% of BC voters spoke loud and clear on the HST. If that doesn’t convince you the right decision was made, nothing will! ;-)
You guys realize this idiot has trolled you yet again?
Mattyc isn’t going away. Might as well make fun of him.
Awww! We ate there when we arrived to PG in 1975 when a #3 was $3.29…it was one of the only affordable great meals in town! You could arrive for a fast dinner after a camping trip with small kids in tow and still have coins jingling in your pocket when you left. We spend every anniversary there as a tribute to this great place, and when we told them that last year, they brought out a free dessert for us… Even Trip Advisor rates them really well!! They will be very, very much missed!
Congrats to PG1234, for being the the only one to pick up on the “closed for renovations” part.
If I am not mistaken the same potato salad is available at the Carmel and the Bon Voyage?
We always enjoyed Jakes, but stopped going there a couple years back, 2 reasons, 1st it had really become run down and 2nd, the sweaty guys cooking out front kinda took away the attraction.
While the Cariboo faded into the background without a hint from anyone, leaving a lot of people hung out to dry with their gift cards that are useless now..
The Cariboo couldn’t survive downtown being ripped up for so long, making access extremely difficult. Its a tough industry to make it in and the city really didn’t help.
Going to miss them both, hopefully Jakes won’t be down too long.
