Concerned Group Calls LNG ‘Dirty Energy Strategy’
Prince George, BC – A group of environmental organizations and advocates says the BC Government’s natural gas strategy will make it impossible to meet the legislated targets laid out in the 2007 Greenhouse Gas Reductions Target Act…
"The BC government is breaking its own law with its plans for massive expansion of fracking and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export development," says Climate Change Project Co-Director, Marc Lee. "We should be calling it the Dirty Energy Strategy."
Lee is one of the organizers of an Open Letter being issued to BC Political Parties in the run up to the spring election, calling on them to re-commit to BC’s GHG reduction laws. Signatories include environmental groups such as the David Suzuki Foundation and the Sierra Club, as well as the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the BC Teachers Federation, Common Energy UBC, and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union. CEP spokesperson, Jim Britton, says, "Workers in BC know that we need to make the transition to a low emissions economy." Britton says investments in clean energy will create jobs and ‘do the right thing’ for our future.
On Friday, Premier Christy Clark announced that Community, Sport, and Cultural Minister, Bill Bennet will be meeting with communities in BC’s northwest to discuss the challenges and opportunities that are anticipated as a result of Liquefied Natural Gas development.
At that time, Clark said, "LNG growth will bring unprecedented benefits to the region, as well as the entire province, including the creation of thousands of high-quality jobs and increased investment in the programs and services we value."
BC’s Greenhouse Gas Reductions Target Act sets a 2020 target of a 33-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions relative to 2007 levels.

Just raise the Carbon Tax, again, and bring in a ‘Cap and Trade’ system, too. BOTH main parties already want that, and the Greens and Conservatives will be on-side, too. Anything which will cause us all to “produce more”, (just to try to stay even at the standard of living we now have), and “consume less”, and everything will be perfect.
Long as we make that “producing more” as labor intensive as possible, that is. No matter that doing so drives up the price of everything to everybody. For it’s the ‘job’ that’s the thing. Not what the job makes, in product, and who needs or wants it.
We’ll all use ‘less’ of that ‘more’ production here that way, when prices are higher still than they are now. Though disposing of it elsewhere might be a problem, even if we give it away. Which we’re already doing, as much as we can. For Heaven forbid anyone should ever think we could all go bankrupt without ‘working’ at it.
Much of this Natural Gas Export business is political hype before the next election.
Much like the Wenner Gren, Rocky Mountain trench project, and the Mono Rail to Alaska, touted by the Socreds a number of years ago. This of course never happened but at the time everyone thought we were on our way.
It wasnt that many years ago that we were going to import Natural Gas into Kitimat, for shipping to the US etc;, and now we think we are going to be a **huge** exporter. There are many many Countries, that are way ahead of us at the Natural Gas Game. Especially the Austrailians.
A lot of these Countries that import Natural Gas use it for the production of electricity. But not Canada (BC). We export it and then flood thousands of acres of land to produce electricity to sell to our American friends. Hmmmmm.
I think that we should build a huge natural gas plant in Prince George somewhere around Salmon Valley to generate cheap electricity to supply other industries in this area. Not the least of which could be year round hot houses, for various types of produce, ie; tomatoes, cucumbers, etc; In addition we could continue to grow seedlings on a large scale.
Having a gas plant here would produce long term employment for a lot of people. In addition we could have other plants in and around Ft St John, the Okanogan, and Kamloops, and even of Highway 37 to supply the new mines coming on stream. Rio Tinto Alcan would not be in favour, nor would the Private run of the river dudes, because Natural Gas produced electricity would be detrimental to their long term plans.
Lets use our cheap gas to produce jobs in Canada. The overall additional greenhouse gas emissions will not be significant.
We need Hydro to get into the Natural gas electricity producing business, and out of the huge dam projects like Site C.
Thanks to the BC Liberals and their friends with run of the river and windmill projects, BC Hydro already has too much (expensive)electricity. Witness the massive discharge at WAC Bennett Dam last spring. A result of the guaranteed contracts given to the so called “green” power projects.
Given that, natural gas generation would be half the cost of Site C electricity and could be built in less than half the time.
Natural gas exports are real, and are on the way, especially given the increased reserves due to fracking. Much better for BC to sell our natural gas at $17/mmcf to Japan, than $3.50/mmcf to Alberta Tarsand production, and then have the Albertans demand pipeline access to the coast so they can get an additional 20% for “their” bitumen.
In 1988, former Canadian Minister of the Environment, told editors and reporters of the Calgary Herald: âNo matter if the science of global warming is all phonyâ¦climate change [provides] the greatest opportunity to bring about justice and equality in the world.â

I think that we should build a huge natural gas plant in Prince George somewhere around Salmon Valley to generate cheap electricity. Palopu wonder what the folks in Salmon Valley would think of your idea. How about in your backyard?
Upper Fraser then, if Salmon Valley doesn’t want it.
Build it on Haldi road :)
No matter what you propose, there will be some small vocal group opposing it.
I’d like to make a motion that we abolish the parliamentary system. All those in favour…? The ayes have it.
Many Years ago I worked at the Burrard Thermal Plant in Ioco, using NG to generate Electricity on Demand. Why are we not building one like it bye the Gas Fields in the North and generate Peak Power on demand ?
Our NG should not be exported, lets us it for Power Production at Home .
Seamutt. I only mentioned Salmon Valley because it seems to me that they have plans for an industrial park in that area.
It really doesnt matter to me where its built. Build it in McBride, or halfway between McBride and Prince George it doesnt matter. BC Rail Industrial Park??
Stathnaver?? Who cares. Im just against building it in China, India, or some other South East Asia Country when we could do it here.
Alberta has a huge gas plant in operation that produces electricity for the oil patch, and everyone knows that this is the way to go, so whats the hold up.
Once the Russians, and Chinese get heavier into fracking, you will see a further increase the the availablity of natural gas.
Even if we built the plants in Kitimat, or Pr Rupert it will be years before they are up and running, and who knows what the market will be then.
I say to hell with the exports. The Government should use the cheap gas to generate industry and business in BC. Its time we did something besides taking the easy route.
Where’s the Canadian Entreprenaurs??? Perhaps they only exist in the minds of the people.
There are huge costs attached to freezing this gas at point of shipment, plus shipping, plus distribution at destination, plus return shipping (empty?).
So one would think there would be a good case for using it right here in our back yard.
The big oil companies along with our Governments are screwing us in the short term so they can make some easy money. Over the long haul this will have a detrimental effect on this Country.
Something like you’re suggesting is too sensible, Palopu, so the naysayers that don’t oppose it on environmental grounds, which are very thin at best, will attack it on financial ones.
And there, what physically could easily be done, and should be done, will be shown by them to be financially impossible. It isn’t, of course, but that’s the way it will be portrayed, and a gullible public which knows no better will once again believe what it’s been very carefully conditioned to believe.
If British Columbia were a country in its own right there is no denying we would be one of the richest countries on Earth when the diversity and extent of our actual natural wealth and our human ability to exploit it is examined physically.
We are the only jurisdiction in all of Canada that would have a chance of being virtually entirely self sufficient, and attaining that self sufficiency could be done without any serious drop in our existing standard of living. Or any dramatic rise in our cost of living, which is another way of saying the same thing.
It’s not ‘entrepreneurship’ that’s lacking. There’s plenty of that evident amongst British Columbians, and always has been. Where we fail is in the way we currently view the financial system ~ we don’t see it as being ‘reflective’ of physical facts, but rather as the ‘determinant’ of them. Until that notion can be changed, what can be done physically is subject to a psychological constraint that will be harder to overcome than actually doing whatever it is that’s so socially desirable to do.
It is the greatest tragedy that those most imbued with that entrepreneurial spirit waste their time futilely supporting a Party like the BC Liberals. A group that has never had an original idea on how to advance the prosperity of ALL British Columbians, and instead represents a backwards looking, rear-guard retreat from everything most of its unwitting supporters purport to stand for, as it takes us down the same failed path its opponents would lead us along.
We got our standard of living from cheap energy. People like Suzuki, Hansen, Mann Sierra club, Greenpeace, etc. are trying to stop us from having that standard of living while they live high on the hog. There are big problems in the EU because of the rising cost of energy, having very expensive alternate forms of energy forced on them chasing a non existent problem. The same thing is happening in BC, Canada and big problems in the US. Harper sees this but plays the political game.
While this goes on, China and India is laughing all the way to the bank as more and more industry moves into their countries chasing cheap energy. China now uses almost as much coal as the rest of the world put together. Oh guess who builds most of the greenie solar cells, bird mincers and happy mercury lights. Like I said laughing all the way to the bank.

That is so funny and our puny C02 output compared to this going on in the rest of the world, well be happy and ignorant in your over priced Prius.
Who actually took notice of the Kyoto Protocol? Coal fired plants going up everywhere.

How is that carbon tax looking now?
What the Carbon Tax costs us will be only the beginning of what’s in store for us once the greater scam of ‘trading’ carbon credits gets fully established. Something ALL our current mainstream Parties here in BC are all for.
Just watch how that will run up the price of everything, as people like Suzuki preach to us how we HAVE to level everyone (here) down, and the gullible public will swallow it.
He’s like the founder of Earth First!, who once proclaimed, ” …every problem on Earth, both societal and environmental, could be solved by phasing out the human race.” But, for all his heartfelt concern for the welfare of the planet, didn’t step forward himself as the first volunteer to be “phased out” to save it.
These phonies would be ignored completely if it wasn’t for the funding they get from those who pollute the most, and will be affected the least, by anything they’re pushing for.
Here is some carbon trading information
