GPS Helps RCMP ‘Get The Goods’

Thursday, February 7, 2013 @ 3:51 AM

Fort St. John, BC – The RCMP are loving GPS technology.  Thieves?  Maybe not so much…

RCMP in Fort St. John were able to locate a $100-thousand dollar backhoe at a rural property near the community, just one day after it was stolen from Grande Prairie, Alberta.

"GPS technology is becoming prevalent in vehicles, heavy equipment and machinery," says Corporal Jodie Shelkie, with Fort St. John RCMP’s Crime Prevention Unit.  "Often within hours, if not minutes, of equipment being stolen, it can be tracked to an exact location."

"It’s a wonderful tool for the police," says Shelkie.  "And a great deterrent for criminals."

The backhoe was stolen last Thursday, and FSJ officers executed a search warrant on Friday.  In addition to the backhoe, they recovered a flat deck trailer, and other stolen property.  Shelkie says an individual associated with the property has been questioned and the investigation is ongoing.

I wonder if someone makes a small portable GPS tracking device that you could hide on just about anything.

They do tractor – alot of companies are putting them on company vehicles now. The technology on some new equipment is pretty cool. You can even put up a “virtual fence” around your machine and if it moves out of the area you have selected you will get an email or text message.

A lot of company GPS’s also track speed – if a unit goes above a set speed for ‘x’ amount of time an email gets sent. That’s why a lot of company vehicles now stick to the speed limit on highways.

So they really are watching us?
