Surrey, B.C. – The Surrey Eagles scored two short-handed goals, one on the power play, one at even strength and one empty-netter Friday night to hand the Prince George Spruce Kings a 5-2 defeat on the lower mainland.
Surrey led 2-1 after one period and made it 4-1 after two before trading goals in the final frame. Jeremiah Luedtke opened the scoring for Prince George at 4:27 of the first but just 14 seconds later Joel Gaudet tied it for the Eagles. They went up by a goal at the 19:34 mark when Adam Tambellini scored on the power play. The Spruce Kings took five minors in the period while outshooting Surrey 11-9. The Eagles were assessed two minors.
Both Surrey short-handed goals came in the middle frame. Brett Mulcahy scored at 8:36 and Tommy Stipanick hopped onto the ice after serving a minor and scored 7 seconds later, while the Eagles were still down a man, at 11:51. That ended the night for Kings’ goalie Kirk Thompson, who gave up four goals on 13 shots. Surrey took all four minors of the period. The Spruce Kings held a 15-11 edge in shots.
In the third Coltyn Hansen narrowed the gap a bit at 13:11 before Brady Shaw put one in the empty Kings’ net with a tick left on the clock. Each team took one minor. Prince George outshot Surrey on the contest 34-32.
The Spruce Kings remain in third place in the Mainland Division. Langley beat Victoria Friday night to move to within 6 points of the Kings, who play in Chilliwack Saturday night.
