Spruce Kings Finally Beat The Chiefs

Saturday, February 9, 2013 @ 9:46 PM
Prince George, B.C. – It took seven attempts games but the Prince George Spruce Kings finally knocked off their Mainland Division nemesis of the 2012-13 BC Hockey League season.

After coming out on the short end of their previous six meetings this season, the Spruce Kings went into Prospera Centre in Chilliwack Saturday night and beat the arch-rival Chiefs 3-1, backed by a simply outstanding performance by the club’s MVP goaltender, Kirk Thompson. He stopped 44 of 45 shots, some in spectacular fashion, while the Spruce Kings fired 27 shots on the Chilliwack net.

The Spruce Kings led 1-0 after one period on Bryant Christian’s marker at 4:31 of the opening frame. Chilliwack tied it on Luke Esposito’s goal at 10:49 of the second before Coltyn Hansen restored the Prince George lead at 16:29. Mark Begert iced the victory with an unassisted, short-handed empty netter at 19:44 of the third.

The Spruce Kings went 0 for 3 on the power play while the Chiefs were 0 for 6.

The Kings are back on home ice next Thursday and Friday when the Langley Rivermen come to town. Langley fell 5-0 to Merritt Saturday night while Coquitlam edged Surrey 3-2 in overtime.
