Prince George, BC – The UNBC Women Timberwolves came out strong early in the game and defeated the visiting, Mount Royal Cougars, 71-66 at the Northern Sports Centre last night.
Mercedes VanKoughnett and Emily Kaehn led the Timberwolves with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Guard, Jennifer Bruce, was the driving force for the team in the end, netting nine of the last 13 UNBC points, going 6-6 from the line.
The Men Timberwolves did not fare as well against Mount Royal, falling 99-91 to the visitors.
The first half of the game was and up-and-down battle with a total of six lead changes and five ties. Mount Royal opened up scoring in the second quarter and, after a handful of UNBC turnovers, were able to spread their lead to nine en route to victory.
The Timberwolves did have three players score 20-points a-piece: Sam Raphael, Joel Rybachuk, and Charles Barton.
The teams get set for re-matches – the final games in their inaugural CIS seasons – tonight. Tip-off for the women is 6pm, with the men playing at 8pm at NSC.
