Garbage Fees In The Bag?

Monday, February 18, 2013 @ 3:58 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George may try an “extra garbage” system.

One of the Core Review recommendations which Council previously asked staff to examine, will be back before Council tonight.

The idea would see stickers, or ribbons, purchased by residents to allow for pick up of an extra bag of garbage. The bag could not weigh more than 20kgs, and would have to bear the prepaid sticker/ribbon when it is placed along side the regular garbage cart.

Staff suggest that if Council wants to go ahead with this idea, that the system  to be used should be one that would have  the automated truck  lift and empty the cart, then have the driver leave the vehicle, load the “extra bag” into the cart, which the truck would then lift and empty. The cost   for this “extra” service  is in the $2-$3 dollar range in three other B.C. communities. ( Kamloops, North Vancouver and New Westminister)

In its report to Council, Staff advise that since the automated system was put in place in Prince George, there have been no reports of repetitive strain injuries from those who pick up the solid waste, and there have been reduced complaints of animals gaining access to garbage. These are two issues staff suggest should be considered.

Kamloops already has this kind of extra garbage system in place, but revenues from the program have dropped significantly since a recycling program was introduced.

Why don’t you just forget the core review and let it die in the gutter along with all of is recommendations and have our own CITIZENS do it with recomendations of how to spend our tax dollars?

Lol! Why did we get the automated trucks to begin with? So the drivers didn’t have to get out of their trucks thus saving on compensation claims. Does anyone remember “The Gong Show” ? GONG!

“Kamloops already has this kind of extra garbage system in place, but revenues from the program have dropped significantly since a recycling program was introduced.”

Hey, I’ve got an idea – why don’t we introduce a recycling system?

The whole idea is to reduce waste going to the landfill. Let’s stop facilitating peoples’ laziness because this is all this is about. There are recycle bins everywhere, so there are no excuses. Let them haul it to the transfer station or to Foothills.

Well… there’s a scam if there ever was one… and it has been underway for a long time …. where do you think they actually take the “recycling” bins and what do you think they do with that product ???

Do you really believe there is a recycling depot in your city ???

I agree with Sine….

Isnt this the reason why there is a small, medium and large. if your producing that much garbage maybe these guys need to pay for two large containers, and just charge them for it. Leave the guys in the truck!

Now that I have Blue Jewel Recycling coming by every 2 weeks ($6 per pickup), I only have one small bag of garbage each week and have downsized to the small container. They collect everything except styrofoam and it is such a good feeling to know that I am not contributing to the landfill! I encourage everyone to look into this very simple option.

I also pay to get my recycling picked up every two weeks. As a non-driver this is an ideal way to deal with it. It’s a no-fuss option and has really reduced the amount of garbage I put out each week. The focus should be on recycling rather than giving people easier ways to produce more garbage.

Give me a break! By recycling bottles, newspaper, cardboard, tin cans and milk jugs our small garbage container is more than adequate. Most of the time we only have to take it to the curb every 2 weeks. Prince George does NOT need a “more garbage” program!

totally agree Sarah70-focus should be on recycling. this is the way it has been done in Ontario for many years now. It is not a new concept. Make recycling cheaper to pick up and garbage more expensive.

vancouver island has a great recycle program that includes composting that is picked up once every two weeks

Why do they hnave those large four bag containers in the first place? In Abbotsford you are allowed two bags and if you have more you can buy stickers for the surpluse.

Talk about mickey mouse. We spend 20 million for a garbage pick up system and now we go back to the driver loading surplus bags manualy.
cheers

So much for the **reducing WCB claims** that was one on the main reasons for going to this automated system.

Fact of the matter is this automated system is costing us a fortune. Smaller loads, more trips to the land fills, and more maintenance of the trucks, etc;

This is another City Hall fiasco that had they done **nothing** they would have saved us millions

“In its report to Council, Staff advise that since the automated system was put in place in Prince George, there have been no reports of repetitive strain injuries from those who pick up the solid waste.”

What repetitive strain injuries might those be? From operating the joystick inside the truck?

I have to admit that it’s funny that we’re now looking to go back to manual pickups for excessive garbage after the arguments for the automated system. A Kinsley legacy we’re all paying for.

And no question the extra bags would be attracting animals, both wild and domestic. One step forward and two steps back?

I wonder what the bear aware people think of this idea.

I repeat what I said previously. Why would we have to pay extra, after sometimes waiting 10 days to have the garbage picked up. If it is picked up once a week, there would likely be no issue.

And the new dumping fees at the landfill site are a dumb idea too. Often I’ve picked up garbage from trails I frequent and even cleaned up garbage on foothills on my way to the landfill site in the past. Not sure if I’ll do it anymore if I have to pay to have the stuff dumped. I suspect more people will opt to just dump for free rather than pay and this will exasperate the problem.

This is good news for the crows.

When the new system was brought in the crows went into shock. Their food supply had been cut-off. After much cawing and hopping around, they finally took off to greener pastures.

Now they can come back to their old hunting grounds. Oh happy days.
