Carrier-Sekani Call For National Inquiry and Independent Investigation

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 @ 12:54 PM
Prince George, B.C.- The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council has reiterated it’s call for a national inquiry into missing and murdered women across Canada.

The call   follows last week’s release of the Human Rights Watch report “Those who take us away”    which painted a picture of aboriginal women being abused by the RCMP. The report alleges police continue to fail to protect indigenous women and girls in the north from violence and  that indigenous women and girls are victims of violent behaviour by police officers .

The Carrier Sekani’s Women’s Representative, Mavis Erickson  says she  is not surprised to hear of the allegations that were outlined in the report “These are the types of allegations we have heard all of our lives and it should come as no surprise to the public, especially in light of the recent allegations by women RCMP Constables filing complaints against their male counterparts. One has to ask if the RCMP are being accused of sexual harassment in the workplace what are they doing to the women who they are supposed to protect?”

The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council wants the Provincial and Federal Government, the RCMP and the UN’s Human Rights Council to follow through with the recommendations contained in the 89 page report as  well as conduct an independent investigation of the allegations.

Pretty hard to investigate the allegations when none of the 50 women actually came forward. It’s amazing the things you will say and allege when you have anonymity! I would like to see a sampling of The Mounties opinions on “the people they take away.” I would like to see more First Nations group take a look in the mirror and accept some of the blame for why they’re mothers and sisters are being murdered at an alarming rate! Instead of beating drums for the cameras every chance they get, maybe they should take a harder look at their own communities. Also tired of hearing Aborginal groups calling for inquiries for everything. For a group of people who want self government they seem to rely heavily on the federal and provincial governments. I’m well aware of what “we” did the harm Aboriginal people since we arrived here, but no amount of money or public inquiry will fix what’s happening in Aboriginal communities around Canada.

“especially in light of the recent allegations by women RCMP Constables filing complaints against their male counterparts. One has to ask if the RCMP are being accused of sexual harassment in the workplace what are they doing to the women who they are supposed to protect?”

Speechless. It is sad that these abuses of women and women RCMP by federal police is happening in Canada. You expect this in a Banana republic, not a democratic country.

‘We’ may be you, but its not me. Harm done in the past was done by people in the past, and blame can’t be laid on people of the present. ‘We’ can learn from the past, and that is a good thing.

As for the allegations I think most people take them with a grain of salt. High risk lifestyles enable those results, but even so the allegations are over the top when one considers the Furlong allegations, and the RCMP anonymous allegations, and the mysterious 500 allegation that even the RCMP say they have no records of unless they get reported. So the conclusion one comes to is someone wants attention and will say anything to get it. Its sad because it undermines their cause all the hyperbole and escapes the personal accountability aspect most other communities would bring to the debate.

I think any community in poverty that does not respect personal dignity is going to have these same problems.

While these two bands are sitting down and hopefully communicating perhaps they can help their own women by getting Hutda Lake out of the treaty negotiations to help their own women……just a thought…

You cry Wolf to many times and soon no one listens ,when they need to be. I don’t know why anyone would want to join the RCMP, its a thankless job.
