Sprouting Connections To Good Food
The Good Food Box Volunteer, Carla Moffat, chats with four-year-old Nora Bergen-Braun, while dad, Matthew Braun, and brother Emmett take in the display at Seedy Saturday
Prince George, BC – Seeds of all sizes and shapes took centre stage in the sunny atrium at The Exploration Place yesterday – part of the annual Seedy Saturday event celebrating the importance of gardening and related off-shoots.
For Matthew Braun, it was the first time in a number of years that he hadn’t been volunteering at the local Community Gardens’ booth, and he was enjoying the opportunity to peruse all the displays and chat with the exhibitors.
The Good Food Box was one such display. Volunteer, Carla Moffat, says the community-based, bulk buying program aims to provide fresh local produce to city residents once per month, for $15 per box. "We really try to focus on local produce as our first priority," says Moffat. "However, at this time of year, you might not get everything from a local source."
The contents of February’s box contained a variety of root vegetables, cabbage, locally-milled grain from Vanderhoof, fruit from elsewhere in BC, along with broccoli and a red pepper that were from outside sources.
The Good Food Box is marking 11 years in the city. Moffat says the program’s goal of providing a sustainable source of healthy food for Prince George families goes hand-in-hand with growing your own food; hence, the obvious connection to Seedy Saturday.
