FCM Rocks!
Councillor Garth Frizzell displays the "rock" chosen to represent Prince George. photo 250NEWS
Prince George, B.C. – Potash from Saskatchewan, amethyst from ThunderBay, red brick from Brampton, gypsum from Grand Prairie, shore rock from the Toronto Islands, are among the "rocks" delegates to the FCM Board of Directors meeting have brought with them to Prince George.
Each delegate was asked to bring a rock that would "represent" their community. The delegates didn’t diappoiont, and some say they had interesting conversations with airport security personnel who wondered why these politicians were carrying "rocks" on to their respective flights.
Not only was the display of some of the rocks a great ice-breaker for those attending the welcoming reception last night at the Two Rivers Art Gallery, the display is just a hint of what lies ahead for these pieces from communities across the nation. The rocks will become part of a public art piece that will be featured during the Canada Winter Games in 2015. So just as the athletes come to Prince George from all over the Nation, they will find there is a little "piece of home" here.
For Prince George, the rock chosen as this City’s contribution is more of a statement of the region, and its future. The "rock" is piece of ore from the Mount Polly mine near Williams Lake. This "rock" is laced with gold and copper.
Today and tomorrow, the delegates get down to work. The meeting wraps up on Saturday and will be followed by some study tours that will look at some of P.G.’s new health facilities, and at bio energy projects at the University as well as the downtown energy system.
Below, some of the rocks delivered to Prince George by FCM delegates:

Couldn’t find a rock around PG so we had to get one from Williams Lake? No more “Giscome Green” lying around? How about a brick for Frizzell and company? As in “thick as…” :)
Should have brought a massive boulder with a neck chain, to represent the debt load PG residents have to carry thanks to his council’s penchant for waste and white elephants.
Rock solid news
Or a big chunk of aspahlt taken from one of the open pit mines in our streets..
^^^
You beat me to it. :)
As long as Frizzell is doing show and tell, maybe he should be telling us what the real reason for council passing the OCP amendment to allow for Women’s Treatment Centre at Haldi……it was supposed to be based on land use and Councillors reasons were anything but…..and since the ladies off the street won’t be helped as originally planned……who profits now and what was the real reason for the change…..would be a lot more interesting than looking at a ROCK!
These buffoons can’t do anything right. PG is not known for its’ gold laden ore. Walk along the nechako and grab some obsidian which was well known and used by natives of the region if you want a true representation of minerals for this area.
There are some rounded river rocks or beach rocks on the table.
I woulkd think that the most common rock found within City limits would be those. I may be forgetting about others, but “blue rock”, on Foothills is about the only place a rock which was chosen would come from. I do not think it is representative of the City.
But hey …. our Council is not known for good decision making. In the end, perhaps that is the message they wanted to present ….. ;-)
It is a difficult crowd …. LOL
Oh! I get it!!! Getting a rock from PG would have been cost productive and logical. This rock is made to represent PG, so a rock from hours away makes perfect sense! Time and money was wasted to go and get it, and makes absolutely no sense. Perfect!
Gus@You can find obsidian along the banks of the Nechako? That’s a new one to me. As far as I know, Carrier people obtained obsidian from Mt. Edziza or Anahim Peak.
So much debate over a rock. Who cares.
This would make sense if the FCM was in Williams Lake perhaps. WTH does Mt Polley have to do with PG?
I would love to know whose brilliant idea this was!
Its not the rock but its arrival and from where?
Cheers
This blog proves Prince Gorgians need to mature still. So much negativity.
I’v got some galena from the Britannia mine would that work
Cheers
DPJ – its not a matter of maturity its a matter of representing the city. FCM – Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Hosted by Prince George. I fail to see what a mine 31/2 hours away that is not even really serviced by PG has to do with our city?
Anybody think to bring a “hard place” with that rock?
No rocks in my neighbourhood west of town. A pottery vase from clay out west here would be more fitting. The glacier missed us.
I think City Council hired a consultant geologist to advise them what kind of rock would really really impress the FCM delegates. Don’t worry, it was probably money well spent, I think.

Kind of a negative comment, don’t you think, DPJ? See how much better that made you feel to get it out? ;-)

There is a seam of it on the west bank of the Kenny Dam. Its not quite the same as Mt Edziza but probably the closest thing to it for the volcanics of the Nechako valley. The Kenny dam silicate for arguments sake lets call it “obsidian” carrys quite and edge and is rather sharp..
Cheers..

This is true.

Why do you say that?
Frizzel Rock, hold it wasn’t that Fraggle Rock….lol
See the guy can’t even follow his own rules, just another laughing stock in counsel. (shaking my head in disbelief).
billposer…I have found obsidian along the nechako right down from the boat lauch on river road. Go take a look in the spring, I bet you find lots.
