IIO Coming to P.G. to Probe Incident
Prince George, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office is coming to Prince George to investigate an incident involving the Prince George RCMP and a suspect who suffered injuries in a fall.’
The IIO says it was called around 7:30 this morning.
According to the IIO, just after midnight, RCMP in Prince George attended an Upland Street apartment building in response to a complaint. Once at the location, the officer exited his vehicle and, according to police, saw one of the males leaving the scene on foot.
During the subsequent pursuit, the officer observed the male fall approximately eight metres down an embankment. He sustained serious injuries during the fall. BC Ambulance Service attended and transported the male to the hospital where he remains.
A team of four IIO investigators, including a forensic specialist, will arrive in Prince George this afternoon. Upon arrival, they will meet with the RCMP liaison officer and initiate the investigation.
The IIO and the Prince George RCMP will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding which clarifies roles and responsibilities in cases where there is a concurrent investigation. In this case, the RCMP will remain responsible for any concurrent investigation involving the actions of the man who fell.

I would think that the IIO is not called to every incident in the province. There must be some sort of standard checklist which would cause them to be called. If there is a decision matrix for incidents, and the matrix is well thought out, then that is the reason why they are coming.
Simple, really.
Better the suspect than the officer falling down the embankment.
The IIO only gets involved in those police incidents in which a person suffers serious harm.
So, this case fits the bill, police investigation that leads to a foot chase, person plunges down embankment and is hurt.
No one is saying it is the police officer’s fault, but, the incident must be examined. There is nothing to suggest this case is anything other than what it seems, however, what if the person was pushed, or tripped, or thrown down an embankment? This is why the IIO is called in, to ensure the investigation into how this person suffered injury is independent and fair to all involved.

It seems so ridiculous that we are paying for the IIO to investigate some idiot suspect running from the police and falling down a cliff ON HIS OWN ACCORD. Seriously, it’s just such a waste of talent.
Ps: I’m glad it wasn’t the officer who fell.
Waiting for the “Matters” report to be released.
Maybe he was helped.
You can’t fix stupid; but why are we going to have to pay for this investigation. Seems pretty clean cut to me. He ran from the cops, he fell.
