Polls Shows Rejection of New Utility

Prince George, B.C.- The City is now looking over the proposals submitted under it’s Request for Proposals for a consultant to assist the City in developing a new “Snow, Ice and Stormwater” utility.
This will be the new fee property owners will see as a line item on their utility bills. Currently, the cost of snow removal is covered by general tax revenues and when more money was needed, taxes were increased. In the past two years, the budgeted amount for snow removal has been depleted because of heavy snow falls.
The new utility is expected to be in place in time for 2014.
The idea of tagging this on to a utility bill is not sitting well with many who took time to respond to the 250News Opinion Poll.
We asked if people supported the development of a new utility for snow, ice and stormwater.
More than 3,000 responses were recorded ( yes, we know, it isn’t scientific) and 2859 (90.7%) said no, they did not support this, and 284 (9.3%) said yes they did.
The Request for Proposals closed yesterday afternoon. There is no word on when the City will make a decision on the successful proposal.

Stop plowing dry streets on sunny days when snow is melting ! Easy simple fix. It seems as if this mayor and council are driven to drive good people out of Prince George with tax after tax after tax, and icrease after increase. Because it is the the “Good” people of PG that are paying taxes, not the criminals and associated element. Way to Go “Mayor” Green (aka Prince John). Where is our Robin Hood?
This will shift some of the tax burden from owners of large homes to owners of small homes. The small homes also have less street per house on average. I think my house is average so it won’t effect me, but I think this tax burden shift should be acknowledged.
Its the move to regressive taxation. Tax the little old lady on a pension the same for snow removal as the guy in the mansion with three acre lots.
When it comes out of general revenue its more progressive as it reflects property values as more of a means to pay.
So do we get to find out why they need a consultant for this little exercise?
All of this plowing when not required serves only to eat up a budget so you can at least have the same amount of money next year. If you saved the budget a million bucks this year, expect next years budget to decrease. It should be that if you don’t spend it, it should carry over to tne next fiscal year and have a competition between civic departments to see who can save the most and still provide the service.
Ohh gus… they need to get as many of their friends on the payroll before they get ousted. Most of us in the general public can not afford more taxes. We do not get raises every year like they do at City Hall to afford to pay more taxes. I totally disagree with how this is being handled. People do not have a say in ANY matter anymore for Council has taken it upon themselves to dictate what is for the betterment of PG if their friends will reap the benefits.
All I can say is that when the tax revolution starts, I would not want to be a politician relying on that for my income.
History shows that the longer something is suppressed, the greater the velocity when it is released. I think the tax-payer backlash, whenever it does happen, will be of epic proportions.
Living in PG for many years one relied on the elected (and hired) staff to look with dedication and wisdom after the running of the city, its ongoing matters including the continuing replacement of aging infrastructure. It didn’t happen, apparently as we are now being told that they are now far behind, having to do some serious catching up. Whose fault is that? Certainly not the taxpayers who paid the taxes as they were assessed by the ones in the ivory towers. They not only did not know about this apparent problem but they depended on those who held the well paying positions to do the right thing, year after year.
Now that the apparent neglect is catching up with the City and the chickens have come home to roost – why should one have faith in the system and that it is now seriously dedicated to do better?
If snow is predicted the city sends out every sand truck 24/7 to sand intersections. It is called “putting on the hours”. My spouse wrote a letter to the editor in the Citizen about this. We didn’t get our snow plowed for two weeks. AND we live on a bus route. So there! The city knows where you live.
Harbinger, your spouse drives a sand truck ?
I wish she did. O.T. galore!
April 1st came early this Year!
