Students Kick Off Sixteen Day Break

Saturday, March 16, 2013 @ 5:17 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Students in School District 57 can forget about scholastic activities for a while. As of Monday they’re officially on spring break, running March 18th to 29th.

And, while the young people take advantage of the two weeks of down time, we’ll pass along the usual message to motorists to be vigilant, especially on week days, in keeping an eye out for little people who may pop out unexpectedly into the flow of traffic.

Now March 29th is Good Friday and April 1st is Easter Monday, but in District 57 students will be going back to classes on the 1st, with the Monday stat moved to March 28th. District Assistant Superintendent Lisa Carson says doing it that way means fewer instructional days are missed by having a two-week spring break with Easter Monday incorporated into that two-week period. She says for staff the 28th amounts to a bank holiday under the current contract.

Carson says the district’s calendar committee, made up of Parent Advisory Committee members, union groups and student advisory groups, meets as a team to decide on the placement of things like Spring Break and the winter break revolving around Christmas.   And that calendar committee decided the best way to handle spring break in this district this year is in the fashion decided upon.

I wish I was a teacher with these kind of holidays…

We won’t be sending our son back on Easter Monday. We will enjoy the full and rare, four day weekend.

All this time off..and they place so low on the provincial tests… Can’t learn much when never in class.

this is a bit of a disingenuous headline. sure there are sixteen days off…six of those are weekends, and two of them would have been days off anyway because they are statutory holidays. the board of trustees of school district 57, the district parent advisory council, and the pgdta all discussed and agreed to the calendar. if dpac or the board of trustees had not agreed, it would have been a one week (read 5 day) spring break.

I’m confused “billy 68” . You must be an educator. It is still a 16 day break,is it not?
