Chiefs Win, Spruce Kings Come Home With a Split

Saturday, March 16, 2013 @ 9:40 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The Chilliwack Chiefs came out of the gate with the pedal pinned to the mat Saturday night in game 2 of their BCHL Mainland Division semi-final.

When the dust settled the Chiefs had handed the Prince George Spruce Kings a 10-1 thumping and the best-of-five series was deadlocked at one win apiece, with the series now moving to Prince George.

The crowd at the Prospera Centre in Chilliwack had plenty to holler about early and often Saturday night. The Chiefs scored at 3:03, 4:05 and on the power play at 11:30 to take a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Chiefs held a 10-6 edge in shots, and each team took two minors. The second period was just as tough on the visitors. The Chiefs scored at 2:02 and 13:36, that last marker the second of the night for Philip Zielonka. That made it 5-0 and at that point the Kings yanked Kirk Thompson from the net and gave Liam McLeod his very first taste of BCHL playoff hockey. No further scoring in the period. Chilliwack outshot Prince George 18-11, with McLeod making 6 saves. The Kings took 3 minors, a misconduct and the team was assessed a game misconduct as Assistant coach Brad Rihela was tossed for comments made to the officials. Chilliwack took four minor penalties in the period.

The Spruce Kings finally broke the goose egg at 7:14 of the third period when Bryant Christian beat Mitch Gillam in the Chilliwack net. Assists went to Jake Lebrun and Sean Landrey. But  Chilliwack scored five more in the period to close it out at 10-1. Eighteen penalties were handed out in the third period, fourteen of them to the Spruce Kings who were picked away at all night by a Chilliwack team that was determined to get under their skin and throw them off their game. It worked. Shots on goal ended up 45-27 in Chilliwack’s favor.

The best the Spruce Kings can do is forget about it right away. They got a split in Chilliwack and come home with the series tied at 1, with the next two games Monday and Tuesday at the Coliseum. They’re the last local team alive in playoffs. Hopefully hockey fans in town will show up to support them .
