UNBC Athletics Awards Top Players

Prince George, B.C.- When it comes to Rookies of the Year at UNBC,  it was the Timberwolves Soccer teams that took the honours. 
 
Women’s soccer player Sidney Roy (Burnaby, BC) and men’s soccer player Tyson Hunter (Langley, BC)  were recipients of the Rookie of the Year Award at last night’s Timberwolves Athletic Banquet.
 
This was a transition year for the Timberwolves teams as they moved out of the college league to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) league.
 
Other awards saw members of the basketball program take home Male and Female Athlete of the Year honours.
 
Female Athlete of the Year went to Mercedes VanKoughnett (Prince George, BC) while Male Athlete of the year was awarded to Sam Raphael (Prince George, BC). Both products of the local Prince George basketball system, VanKoughnett is in her fourth year of eligibility while Raphael is in his fifth and final year.
 
Team specific awards were as follows:
 
UNBC Men’s Basketball
·        Best Defensive Player – Sam Raphael (Prince George, BC – fifth year)
·        Rookie of the Year – Navjot Bains (Surrey, BC – first year)
·        Most Outstanding Player – Sam Raphael (Prince George, BC – fifth year)
·        Zane Robison Award (most dedicated) – Josh Raphael (Prince George, BC – first year)
UNBC Women’s Basketball
·        Most Valuable Player – Mercedes VanKoughnett (Prince George, BC – fourth year)
·        Most Improved – Jasprit Nijjar (Vancouver, BC – first year)
·        Best Defensive Player – Emily Kaehn (Hixon, BC – fourth year)
UNBC Women’s Soccer
·        Best Offensive Player – Sidney Roy (Burnaby, BC – first year)
·        Best Defensive Player – Jordan Hall (Prince George, BC – second year)
·        Most Valuable Player – Sidney Roy (Burnaby, BC – first year)
·        Green and Gold Award (coach’s award) – Katie (Catherine) Blokker (London, ON – first year)

UNBC Men’s Soccer
·        Golden Boot (Top Scorer) – Sourosh Amani (Almere, NED – fourth year)
·        Most Valuable Player – Tyson Hunter (Langley, BC – first year)
·        Defensive Player of the Year – Ty Venhola (Abootsford, BC – first year), Mitch MacFarlane (Prince George, BC – first year)
·        Coach’s Award – Danny Dell (Burns Lake, BC – fifth year)
Players who graduate this year   were also honoured. The seven graduating players were each   presented with their own mini-drum  hand-made by the UNBC First Nations Drum team.
