Lakeland Announcement Tomorrow

Prince George, B.C. – Lakeland Mills has set the stage for a “significant announcement” tomorrow and there are some who are hopeful that announcement will be word the mill will be rebuilt.

A media conference has been called for 11:30 at which time Lakeland President Greg Stewart will address the media and take questions.

It has been nearly a year since a major explosion and fire ripped through the mill, taking the lives of two employees and injuring many others.

WorkSafe BC had suggested it was referring it’s investigation to Crown Counsel for possible charges in that   blast and the one which claimed two lives at the Babine Forest Products mill in Burns Lake in January of 2012. There has been no further word on that possible action.
Stewart has long said his company   has a deep attachment to the community of Prince George, and while not making a commitment to rebuilding the mill in Prince George, he has never ruled out that possibility.

Over the past week, there has been activity at the site, as crews have been removing more of the debris.

Fingers crossed. Rebuild

Does anyone recall if an announcement was scheduled before the rebuild of the Burns Lake Mill was announced.

my bet is they are rebuilding.
1.Good lumber prices
2.Good people and loggers
3.Cheaper to truck or rail wood from mackenzie than try to get good people there.
4.Excellent existing infrastructure.
5. CHP plant to sell heat.

If they rebuild will they build it explosion proof?

With the lumber market on the rise in the USA, this gives them an opportunity to build a state of the art mill. In addition they have the Co-Gen agreement with the City.

However with charges pending, and the concern of the enviromentalists, who knows what the announcement will be.

Im betting that they will rebuild, mainly because of the high price of lumber in the USA.

For those who constantly knock the Americans, one should keep in mind that they are our number one trading partner, and without them we have very little, when it comes to top grade 2×4,s,

Explosion proof. Just as soon as they bring in all that fire resistant timber

Stay classy NoWay.

I am hoping that they will rebuild in PG, but not in that location.

Heavy industry does not belong in that part of the city.

Does anyone know why 5+ people would recommend this story? Recommend it for what?

Lots of interest in the City when it comes to rebuilding this mill.

Every where the Railway and Industry locate, the Cities cluster around them. When do you think they will smarten up??

Duhhhhhhhh.

Why wouldn’t you recommend this story? It’s possibly very good news.

Pat Bell has promised the trees, Green has promised no taxes, Commonwealth is looking after arranging financing from NDIT, BID will be short listed, Marshall Smith will be the manager.

If the timber supply is there to make it viable, then by all means rebuild it. It will have a host of benefits to the City, hopefully not the least of which is employment for some of those who were hurt and displaced.

Right on red2b

I’m rooting for you Lakeland employees!!!

Seriously they have to build it explosion proof just like they have to build refineries to explosion proof standards.

I would sure be concerned as a Lakeland employee as to what safety standards they are going to built the mill to if that is what they are announcing tomorrow.

Classy enough Ruez?

Don’t know if you know about the industry NoWay but it is impossible to make a sawmill explosion proof they can greatly reduce the risk of an explosion but it is impossible to make a sawmill or any other industry that deals with wood explosion proof.

ditto Sine Nomine. Here’s hoping.

I bet anything its not about rebuilding or not. I think its just going to be WCB answer to what happened. IMO

gold_rush, I think worksafe or the government would be holding a news conference if it were about the investigation. The article says this news conference will be hosted by the president of the company.

“Every where the Railway and Industry locate, the Cities cluster around them. When do you think they will smarten up??”

It is that way in the majority of the older cities in the world. It is a progression of city growth which originated hundreds of years ago. In the later half of the 20th century, a reversal started, partly because the blue collar jobs (remember that term?) became fewer and fewer and the white collar jobs became the dominant jobs. People became aware of their surroundings ….. in fact, people simply became more aware through better communication.

BUT, we forget one thing, under the dictat …. I mean directorship .. of the lady who wanted to have a conversation, we are not actually having a conversation. We are getting a lecture of how it is to be. ;-)

Gus, I agree that locating the mill elsewhere like the BCR Site would be better. Get the heavy Industry of the Cache. Won’t happen though.

for a Co-gen plant and HW heating plant to be viable … that is the only location ..what else are they gonna put there on the flood plain ? Housing?

Ok you might be right RUEZ. Soon soon we will find out. Hoping its a rebuild, that would be pretty exciting.

Hardly a Co-gen plant. Thermal oil plant burning biomass to produce heat in the form of thermal oil. Thermal oil is then used to heat hot water in a tube and shell exchanger.
