Spruce Kings Fall to Chiefs in Rubber Match

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 @ 9:19 PM
Prince George, B.C. – It came down to one 60-minute contest. Winner take all and move on to the next round of the BC Hockey League playoffs.

The Prince George Spruce Kings against the Chilliwack Chiefs at the Prospera Centre in Chilliwack in Game 5 of the best-of-five Mainland Division semi-final. The visitors from Prince George opened the scoring at 1:13 of the first period, Braiden Epp converting with the lone assist going to David Stephens. That held up until the 7:20 mark when Josh Hansen tied it up at 1-1, and that’s the way the period ended. The Chiefs outshot the Spruce Kings 17-8. There were no penalties.

Period number two saw the mistakes start to creep in resulting in four minor penalties and contributing to the Chiefs’ second goal of the night. Three penalties, two to the Chiefs and one to Prince George in the first half of the period, were killed off effectively. But, with the Kings’ Skylar Pacheco in the box for high sticking, Philip Zielonka cashed in a bouncing puck following a huge save by Kirk Thompson at 12:38 to give Chilliwack a 2-1 lead. The Spruce Kings had plenty of quality scoring chances and outshot Chilliwack 13-10 but couldn’t beat Mitch Gillam in the Chiefs’ net.  2-1 Chilliwack after 40 minutes.

The Spruce Kings dug themselves a big hole early in the third. Just 1:07 in, Mathieu Tibbet and Spencer Graboski combined to turn the Prince George defence inside out, Tibbet finishing off the play to put Chilliwack up 3-1. And that goal seemed to give the Chiefs the juice they needed. Austin Plevy came out of the corner and stuffed one past Thompson to make it 4-1 at 7:26. The Spruce Kings made it 4-2 at 9:44 as Jake Lebrun and Shayne Morrissey assisted on Sean Landrey’s first goal of the post-season.   But the Chiefs played tight, defensive hockey for the rest of the period, running out the clock on the Spruce Kings’ 2012-2013 season. Austin Plevy put the puck into an empty Prince George net with 3.8 seconds left on the clock. Final score Chilliwack Chiefs 5 Prince George Spruce Kings 2. Chilliwack held a 39-37 edge in shot on goal.

The Chiefs will face the Surrey Eagles in the Mainland Division final series. The Spruce Kings look ahead to next season.
