P.G. Moves Up in Best Places to Live Rankings
Thursday, March 21, 2013 @ 6:44 AM
Prince George, B.C. – When it comes to Canada’s best places to live, MoneySense magazine ranks Prince George 145 out of their list of 200 Canadian communities.
According to the magazine, the number one City in Canada is Calgary, in fact, five of the top ten communities in the country are in Alberta.
Prince George’s ranking is an improvement over last year, when it was ranked 156.
The rankings are based on a number of factors including, jobless rates, annual income, crime severity, and population growth .

Not bad! Only 11 from the bottom.
Oops I mean 55 from the bottom. Moved up 11.
Yay PG! We’re 145th best, we try harder! Our new community slogan.
Anyone forward this article to Maclean’s magazine?
Its interesting to note that our so called
**comparative** Cities rank much better.
Coquitlam 56
Kamloops 64
Kelowna 76
Nanaimo 88.
Average house price, Coquitlam $504,143, Kamloops $299,134, Kelowna $418,956, Nanaimo $351,751. Prince George $232,980.
And to think that it is all due to the Mayor. ;-)
The big move upward must be associated with the hard working city council, drug treatment center controversy, airport runway expansion, crime capital of Canada, voted worst roads in BC, and of course WDIC where city council hosed the taxpayer for 4 million dollars to receive a return of 26 dollars.
Take a bow, council. 55th from the bottom is not a passing grade.
As far as I’m concerned, I hope we get low rankings. That way nobody else comes in spoiling this great place.
Lol, 145 out of 200.
Weren’t we in the top 10 worst places to live a few months back? These lists are absolutely pointless.
I just finished conducting a 5 year, comprehensive survey and PG finished first in the category of best places to live.
Of course, I only included PG (with no other cities). But my results are accurate, aren’t they? ;)
@Weaksauce. I totally agree with you.
If only we had a Performing Arts Centre. That would fix everything. Alas!
You are right Harb. We need another place that people stay away from in droves.
We don’t pay enough taxes already??
The criteria used for this survey is as follows.
1. Bike to work.
2. Days with rain/year
3. Days above 0 deg C
4. Population growth 11-12
5. Jobless %
6. Average House Price
7. Crime Severity
8. Property tax %
9. Doctors per 1000
10.Employed in arts and rec %
11.New car%
Have a nice day.
The high crime and low culture are PG’s main weaknesses. Prince George region is in the crime belt region of BC with crime ranks of:
Terrace 174
Prince George 176
Fort St John 180
Quesnel 184
Prince Rupert 186
Williams Lake 187
But in terms of crime ranking, the BC provincial capital Victoria is also ranked 167 and the first crime city among provincial capitals. Are we the most crooked province? Our politicians’ fault? BC Liberals’ policies?
Victoria crime ranking is more in line with the territory capitals of yellow knife (187) and white horse (175) and not other provincial capitals.
“Houston, we have a problem”
According to them Prince George does not have a movie theater.

If we get the fluoride out of the water we might be able to crack the top 100!
If we get rid of the anti-flouride crackpots, we might crack the top 100!
WOW, the mayor’s new crime task force worked wonders…LOL
Just read thier methodolgy. Some of the weighting makes you wonder how PG is even on the list. A higher percentage of people riding bikes to work makes it a better city to live in… really? More days above zero – same thing. More people riding public transit. Extra points for a higher percentage of people working in arts and culture?
Weaksauce is right these lists are absolutely useless lol
“in fact, the top ten communities in the country are all in Alberta.”

Krusty:”If we get rid of the anti-flouride crackpots, we might crack the top 100!”
Obviously you have never bothered to find out what fluoride actually is because you are even unaware of its correct spelling!
Furthermore, Calgary not too long ago informed itself about the dangers of fluoridation and it STOPPED adding this industrial waste chemical to the city’s water supply!
That alertness and respect for human rights makes Calgary the top city to live in in Canada!
(You brought up the subject! Thanks!).
I am anti-flouride! More rice please!!
A reverse osmosis system removes all the flouride.. if you are so worried about flouride in your water it must be worth spending a couple hundred bucks to get rid of all your flouride worries.
Reverse osmosis removes all minerals in the fluoridated water, but it does not remove any fluoride. Thanks for the tip, P Val, but it is useless.
BTW, 98% of all B.C. residents live in communities that do not have artificial water fluoridation since they voted to stop it. Ipso ergo (att. Krusty) 98% of the BC population are crackpots.
Even with gang Green and council (with the exception of Brian Skakun who is definately mayoral material). Prince George is the best place to live in all of Canada. I am an ex service member and I’ve lived in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Manitoba.
I agree with you in being convinced that Prince George is a good place to live. However, my personal health and right to choose is at stake when medication is delivered via the tap water. It’s something which the vast majority of B.C. communities decided not to tolerate any longer. It is not unreasonable to ask or even demand that since it is no longer seen as a benefit but a potential health hazard that a stop be put to it as soon as tomorrow morning.
That would make Prince George an even better place and a lot safer too.
“If we get rid of the anti-flouride crackpots, we might crack the top 100!”
– applause –
The fluoride issue is basically a non-starter. Who really cares??
As I said before canned goods, ice cream, whiskey, candy, carbonated drinks, banana’s, gasoline fumes, etc; etc; etc; are a lot more dangerous to some people than a little fluoride.
I expect that if it goes to a referendum is will be taken out of the water, and that won’t make any difference to me.
In or out it is a non-issue.
Maybe if they had more than rhetoric. Apparently, people eat it up.
Best Water Prince George
best fishing Prince George
Best winter city Prince George
Best affordable Prince George
Most accessable sportfacilities Prince George
Best place for families Prince George
Best traffic conditions Prince George
Best snow removal Prince George
Best outdoor Playground Prince George
Prince George may have some problems however it does have an abundance of great things about it.
Best Water Prince George
– I would agree. I’ve never had better tap water than in PG and it’s the best by quite a large margin IMHO.
best fishing Prince George
– HIGHLY debatable. The fishing in PG is good, but I don’t even think it would be the best in BC let alone Canada. The fishing in and around Ottawa would rival PG and likely even exceed it (it is different though).
Best winter city Prince George
– NOT EVEN CLOSE. Ottawa has PG whipped like a red headed step child on this one.
Best affordable Prince George
– HIGHLY debatable. There are lots of communities across Canada who are just as affordable, if not less expensive.
Most accessable sportfacilities Prince George
– I would agree that for a city of PG’s size, it has very good access to sports facilities. Compared to larger centres though, it would lose out.
Best place for families Prince George
– See my best winter city response.
Best traffic conditions Prince George
– Agreed, PG’s traffic is a non-issue.
Best snow removal Prince George
– LOL, LOL, LOL! Nope . . .
Best outdoor Playground Prince George
– See my best fishing response except substitute outdoor playground for fishing.
Some other things about PG that are good:
– It has some really good restaurants for a city its size
– People are friendly for the most part
– Pretty good sense of community
– It’s home . . .
Some other bad things about PG:
– Air quality
– Isolation
– Crime
– Small town thinking
– Lack of culture compared to larger centres
– Downtown core is brutal
Yes but NMG, little ol’ PG finally has a big city political scandal. We are progressing, LOL. Go Sens
LOL, that’s true!
Oh and two more good things about Ottawa:
– Hockey owners who actually care about the city their franchise operates in
– My wife, son and I can go watch NHL hockey on family nights for roughly $5.00 more in TOTAL than what it would cost us to go to a Cougars game for an equivalent night out (three tickets, three hot dogs, three pop)
Go Sens :)
my coments of being the Best was wrong. I should have used the words ‘pretty Good’
just wanted to make a point that PG is a pretty good place.
It has some problems for sure but overall its a good place for alot of reasons.
I would love to see PG solve many of its issues, and become a much better city.
