Prince George, B.C.- The Wood Innovation and Design Centre will go ahead.
The announcement was made moments ago at the Ramada Hotel, across from the site where the Centre will be built.
The building will be the tallest modern wood building in North America and has been designed by Michael Green Architecture of Vancouver.
More details, and images of the 6 storey project will be posted shortly.

Programming provided in the WIDC will advance the Provinceâs Wood First agenda and bring together professionals such as builders, architects, designers and engineers to advance the commercialization of value-added wood building and design products.
The WIDC will house wood-related research facilities and classes with the University of Northern British Columbia OR ANOTHER PUBLIC POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTION, as well as office space for industry and potentially provincial use.
So, the amount of space to be taken up by whom is not yet determined. They have obviousy also not made a deal with UNBC yet.
We may yet see FPInnovations/UBC move to town, or, under a new government, have the building “repurposed”.
The fairness advisor’s report has also been released

President Iwama was interviewed on CBC radio this morning and he said that UNBC is waiting on funding approval to run and staff a “second campus” and everything looked good but that was a critical key on UNBC moving in there.
You can hear the interview here if you like

The UNBC Senate heard the other day of 3.5 FTE staff members being laid off, Faculty jobs not being posted and that the student numbers are flat and below the required FTE for the funding they get from the province and yet still wanting to add a second campus ?
Hang on to your hats folks, this will be a good ride. with all the controversy of building site right down to the architect from the big smoke telling us that a wood 2 x 4 is much better than a steel stud .Will make for great reading
UNBC is broke.
Wow, bigger is better, but really don’t seem to have a plan on just who will fill it, other than made of wood whats the real objective? 25 plus million for down town PG 35 million for cop shop I give lets move town town could save us money in the long run.
Please people, be positive for a change. Stop ranting and be part of the solution. The widc centre is going to be awesome for downtown & we should be lucky that it is here in PG.
I thought the province was broke?

Please read up on what this building will likely be built with – cross laminated timber panels. They were “invented” in Austria and are now manufactured in Penticton.
This entire project has an odd smell to it.

Thank you Gus for being a voice of reason in these comments.

Prince George, BC – The BC Liberal Government has made good on a long-promised Learning and Development Centre at the University Hospital of Northern BC – approving $9.9-million dollars in funding for the facility, which will go up at the hospital.
;)
Do you still think they are going to get funding for this now?
