Former Vancouver Mayor Art Phillips Dies

Vancouver, B.C. – Former Vancouver Mayor Art Phillips has died. He passed away today at Vancouver General Hospital from complications resulting from an infection.

Art Phillips was 82. He was the mayor of Vancouver from 1972 to 1977 and is credited with helping shape the physical and political landscape of the city through his vision. He leaves behind his wife Carole Taylor, six children and several grandchildren.

Premier Christy Clark has issued the following statement on the death of Phillips:

“Vancouver has lost one of its greatest city-builders and elder statesmen in Art Phillips. A gentleman in every sense of the word, Art was concerned with improving the quality of life in Vancouver.
“As mayor, he was a transformational leader who helped make one of Canada’s great cities the envy of the world. He achieved success in business, community work and in his private life – always with a generous spirit and while remembering to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate. We who are lucky enough to call Vancouver home owe him a great debt.

“I extend my deepest condolences to Carole Taylor and his family, and join in mourning Art Phillips’ passing.”
